DraftKings. Love this spot for Payton Tolle. With Shea Langliers going on the IL and Nick Kurtz on the bench, the Athletics lineup is pretty miserable tonight, with only two hitters above a 92 wRC+ versus lefties. Tolle has been fantastic for the Sox, especially on the road where he’s pitched to a 2.83 ERA. He should acquit himself nicely in the Sutter Health Park bandbox as he largely suppresses hard contact. Aroldis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock are both fully rested behind the Sox lefty tonight. For the A’s, Jack Perkins has really struggled in the hitter-friendly conditions, with a 7.41 ERA. Overall, the A’s have lost 8/9 games in which Perkins has pitched at least four innings.
DraftKings. This is a brutal matchup for the Angels to string hits together tonight. The Halos run very right-handed heavy, only with four lefty hitters on the roster. Two of those lefties are hitting .212 or worse against right-handers. And as for the others, Tatsuya Imai allows a .169 average against (.177 xBA) versus righties, coupled with a 14.7% walk rate. In total, he’s under this line in 10/14 starts.
FanDuel. Walbert Arena has been a pleasant surprise for the pitching-starved Angels atop their rotation. The rookie has pitched to a 2.78 ERA (3.30 xERA) while clearing this line in 10/15 fully stretched out starts since joining the rotation. This includes 7/8 at home, and an impressive 25% K%/30% whiff rate against righties. The Astros skew very right-handed heavy, which should allow Urena to unleash his impressive sweeper (39% whiff rate against righties, 121 stuff+).
Cards lefty Matthew Liberatore got rocked last time out vs. the Angels. For the season, he’s allowed a 43 percent hard-hit rate and an expected slugging percentage of .462. Look for the Cubs to hand St. Louis its eighth loss in 10 games.
David Peterson has actually been OK for the Cubs, but he was destroyed by these Cardinals for 10 runs over 3.2 innings. His other 17 innings thrown, he’s allowed three runs. The Cardinals are bottoming out. They’ve lost seven of nine, they’re not hitting like they used to. The Cubs are hitting. STL starter Matthew Liberatore has a 6.61 ERA his last seven starts and the bullpen has a 5.34 ERA since the break.
Normally I'd avoid fading New York ace Max Fried against struggling White Sox rookie Noah Schultz, but the Yanks will be off that awful Sunday night baseball spot, and they lost All-Star outfielder Cody Bellinger to the IL on Sunday. That's the last thing an injury-ravaged and struggling lineup needs. In their last 32 games (entering Sunday night), the Yankees have averaged only 3.25 runs per. Schultz was a touted prospect for a reason and has shown some promising signs at home at times. I'm starting to actually believe in the White Sox as a playoff club. Really solid price as good as the Pale Hose have been at Comiskey (I'll always call it that) at 33-18 ATS.
Atlanta hasn't performed well against left-handed pitching on the road this season, batting just .232 as a team. Zac Thornton has pitched only 23.1 innings in his major league career and may lack the experience needed to navigate the depth of the Braves' lineup. Martin Pérez has pitched well this season, posting a 3.38 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. Yes, this game is essentially a coin flip, but despite Atlanta's limited success against left-handers, New York has been even worse, hitting just .222 at home against them. The absence of Juan Soto also hurts an already struggling Mets offense.
DraftKings. The Mets have to like what they’ve seen so far from Zac Thornton - the rookie is pitching to a 1.93 ERA, while only allowing 14 hits in 23.1 innings. Even if he’s pegged as the dreaded “regression candidate” with a .251 xBA compared to his .175 actual average allowed, the lefty has a great matchup on his hands tonight. The Braves have really struggled against southpaws, only hitting .226 since May 1st, and .215 over the last 30 days. Thornton, despite his success, is on a tighter leash due to workload restrictions.
The Washington Nationals had both CJ Abrams and James Wood homer twice in yesterday’s win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. That can put value on the rest of the bats that are getting overlooked. Daylen Lile himself cleared his combination line offering in both weekend matchups, and now will see Max Scherzer. Expect Scherzer to have his issues the second time through the National’s lineup, and for Lile to capitalize. Play his combination line over.
Who would've predicted C.J. Abrams to lead the Major Leagues in RBIs on July 27th? Definitely not me! But the Nationals' shortstop and cleanup hitter has been on an incredible tear since the All-Star Break, having totaled 19 hits including 7 home runs in nine games. He has hit for at least two total bases in seven straight games and 8 of 9 since the break. Expect Abrams to continue to cook on Monday against future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer, who returns from the Injured List to face his former team.
Gunnar Henderson had just one hit in the Orioles last series against Atlanta, but made it count as it was a home run. Henderson is actually having his worst month at the plate hitting just .192, but will see a Detroit team he has had high success against in his career. He homered in the first series this season against Detroit, and also had a rare three hit game in that series. Over his last twelve games against the Tigers he has had at least one hit in eleven games. Take Henderson in all hitting props, as he sparks the Orioles at the plate.
This must be an alt F5 total with the bigger price and the rest of our books at 4.5 -- but the difference between that and 5.5 is just so massive that will do it. Two solid starting pitchers in Kyle Bradish (3.49 ERA) and Keider Montero (3.14 ERA). The full-game total is only 8.5. Detroit is without one of its main power guys in Kerry Carpenter after he suffered a minor injury Sunday. No Gleyber Torres, either. Weather doesn't look too hitter-happy in a generally pitcher-friendly Comerica Park.
Arizona has dropped two straight but prior to that had won 10 of 12, and the offense is hitting, scoring six-plus runs in six of the last nine games. The Pirates’ bats have cooled a bit, scoring 8 in a win over the Cubs on Sunday but had two runs over the prior three games. Mitch Keller vs. Merrill Kelly look similar overall, but look closer. Kelly in July is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA and he’s been far better on the road this season. Keller in July is 0-2 with a 5.14 ERA and he’s been far worse at home.
The Phillies have to travel after a Sunday night game but they get Zack Wheeler on the mound and I think the better bet here is on Wheeler to continue being really good rather than the offense booming tonight. The Philly bullpen got off easy last night with it being a blow out and they needed it after being a bit overworked with some "sickness" in the clubhouse over the past few days. Miami doesn't see a ton of pitches and has produced just a .630 OPS vs. righties during the last couple weeks of struggles, ranking as a bottom-five offense in that time. If Wheeler is going well, I think Don Mattingly leaves him in for the 7th.
Zack Wheeler is pitching as well as anyone in the majors at the moment. He looks highly motivated and definitely took his All-Star snub personally. He’s been downright dominant in the month of July and I like that trend to continue today versus an average Miami lineup. I’d comfortably play this at 7.5 as well for plus money.
