It’s tough to back the Texans considering the pitiful offensive display they have put forward. However, dating back to last season, Houston’s offense is completely different when Nico Collins is out, and not having Tank Dell (IR) to help impacted it, too. Collins is back, and the Texans are facing a do-or-die situation against a Cowboys defense that is easily exposed, and while Dallas has a ton of offensive talent, I don’t believe Houston has simply forgotten how to get to the passer and affect receivers. The Cowboys’ offense is the best unit in the game, and Dak Prescott is better than C.J. Stroud, but the Texans have the horses to get home and prevail in a must-win game.
I don't even know why I bother going to team sites for information because they are all such homers -- all picking the team they cover. Thanks for the guidance. It's the season for 0-3 Houston, which gets Nico Collins back. Without him the past two, the offense averaged 11.5 points per game, but Houston scored 31 against the Bills with the Pro Bowler in the lineup in the season opener. The defenses aren't close in talent, especially with the Cowboys down a few guys on that side. And they just had that long trip to Brazil and back.
I’m back on Dalton Schultz to stay under his long reception prop. He’s remained under this line in 10/14 games with both CJ Stroud and Nico Collins, dating back to last season. However, it’s the coverage matchup that intrigues me the most today. The Cowboys play cover 3 or cover 4 defenses more than 61% of the time - the second highest combination of those two coverage. When facing either cover 3 or 4, Schultz’ target per route run dropped by 3% last year, and 18% this year. And dating back to the beginning of last season, none of his 36 catches against the coverages have gone for more than 17 yards. I’m selling high on Schultz today.
It’s desperation time for the 0-3 Texans. The offense hasn’t been good the last two weeks, but QB C.J. Stroud should have opportunities to add a new wrinkle with his legs. The Cowboys rank dead-last in the NFL in rushes and rush yards allowed to opposing QBs. Stroud has taken off 2-3 times in each game already, gaining 10, 29 and 15 yards. He certainly shouldn’t finish lower than the norm here.
We missed the 1.5s and the 2.5s, so rather than lay 3, I am playing the money line for Houston to just win the game, which I believe they will do and avoid an 0-4 start. Like Baltimore, Dallas too is coming off a very emotional, international travel, game. The Texans offense has been a huge problem - but not so much when they played a weaker defense and had Nico Collins in the lineup - like they did in Week 1 against Buffalo. Similar here with a much lesser opponent in the Cowboys. On top of being weak defensively, Dallas is also missing key players at Linebacker and in the secondary. I believe Houston gets it figured out this week and wins the game.
We're fading the public on this one. Houston's defense was trounced by Josh Allen, but it's not the only one. It also held the Bengals and Colts to 20 and 19 points. The offense hasn't held up its end at all, but can here vs. a 30th-ranked Cowboys run defense. Getting Nico Collins greatly helps CJ Stroud.
Ceedee Lamb is the clear focal point of a very explosive and efficient Dallas passing attack. Lamb has been truly awesome this year, but I think this a really tough matchup for him against a Texans defense that has mostly struggled despite sky high expectations. The Texans still boast a very good secondary ranking 2nd in Dropback Success %, coupled with double teaming at the highest rates in the league. The Texans have also been able to consistently generate pressure without blitzing, which has long been Dak Prescott’s kryptonite. Lamb and company will really have to earn it against a bit of a sleeping giant in the Texans pass defense.
The Texans offense has a great matchup this week going up against the Cowboys, but I think it's still a good time to fade Schultz. He played fewer snaps than Foster Moreau last week and saw only three targets even without Nico Collins on the field. That means his Week 2 explosion is likely to be an outlier as we go along, but that performance plus the matchup has this number inflated as he should probably be lined in the 30s with Collins expected to return. I'd play this down to 40.5.
Nico Collins is one of the league's most valuable offensive weapons; don't believe me? For his career CJ Stroud averages 10.7 yds/att targeting Nico Collins vs 7.7 on everyone else and it was evident against a battered Colts defense last week. Dallas enters this game unsure who might actually be healthy enough to log reps in their defensive backfield as the injury bug keeps decimating the unit. For Houston the run defense has been great this year but the pass D has struggled to start. If they can make Dallas one dimensional it should lead to success come Sunday and this ML is cheaper than my expected game day close of -170
In the one game Nico Collins played this season, the Texans put up 31 points and nearly beat Buffalo. The offense has looked terrible without him the past two weeks. Now there is optimism Collins (hamstring) will return in Week 4, along with starting right guard Ed Ingram (groin). Ingram also has missed two straight games. CJ Stroud will be facing a Cowboys' defense allowing a 121.3 passer rating -- third-highest in the NFL. The Texans know their season isn't over; they also started 0-3 last year before finishing 12-5 and winning the AFC South. Look for a desperate performance from the home team.
The Cowboys are coming off a gutting loss, having tied the game with seven seconds left and still losing in regulation. I like fading them on the road against a team with its back against the wall in the Texans. Their cornerbacks can help neutralize the Cowboys' elite receivers, and I expect the pass rush to make things difficult for the Dallas offensive line. The Texans offense should find success against a questionable Cowboys defense that has been dealing with injury issues, and Houston may have top weapon Nico Collins back as well. This should get to 3, and I'd actually put it on the other side of the key number.
