Caesar’s. Luis Ortiz has stayed under this line in seven of his thirteen starts, including five of seven away from home. He struggles outside of Cleveland, with a 5.40 ERA and a 12.2% walk rate. He also struggles more against lefties, with a .796 OPS allowed and a 14.4% walk rate. He’ll get six lefties from Seattle today, who as a team see the second most pitches per plate appearance. And Seattle’s bats have come alive, with a .794 OPS over the last 10 days against right handed pitching.
After rallying for five runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal a win from the Padres on Saturday night, the D-backs might be thinking they're invincible. That also makes it five straight wins for Arizona as the Snakes seem to be shaking off the cobwebs of a difficult May. Merrill Kelly has also been superb in his last two starts, allowing no runs and just five hits across 13 IP in wins vs. the Braves and Mariners. Meanwhile, San Diego seems to be floundering a bit, and Nick Pivetta has started to wobble, with an ERA of 9.00 and WHIP of 1.70 across his past two starts (losses to the Dodgers and Giants). Somewhat have to disregard the starting pitchers here because it appears the White Sox might have the edge with recently acquired veteran Aaron Civale (1-2, 4.91 ERA) opposed by struggling Rangers rookie Kumar Rocker (1-4, 8.87 ERA). But there's a reason Rocker, who has been better at home, is a touted prospect -- and the lineups aren't close. Luis Robert is not in the ChiSox lineup and he has finally started to hit some. Evan Carter is back in for Texas after not starting Saturday. Since returning from the injured list June 3, Carter has slashed .407/484/.815.
The St. Louis Cardinals ended their six game losing streak with a big win against the Brewers yesterday. The bullpen came up big in a huge bases loaded scenario to avoid damage. Now look for the Cardinals to build off that win with Miles Mikolas on the mound. The Cardinals have done a great job in giving Mikolas run support with four or more runs in four straight outings. Take the Cardinals.
Brent Rooker's line is a bit all over the place today, but +450 is great value considering his average line is +350. Rooker has been excellent against left-handed pitching and during day games this season. Against LHPs, he's hitting .321 with a 1.070 OPS. In day games, he's also hitting .321 with a .978 OPS and has 8 home runs in 27 games. Royals' starter Noah Cameron got hit hard in his last start, as some regression was due with MLB teams starting to learn the rookie's tendencies. The weather is also hitter-friendly in today's game, so expect the ball to carry. We set the line at +315 for Rooker to homer.
Brandon Lowe is swinging a hot bat with three straight multi-hit games, going 7-for-13 in that span. While he hasn't homered in those games, Lowe has always been a streaky hitter, and when he's hot, he's usually due to hit some long balls. Griffin Canning has been a revelation for the Mets this season, but he did allow 2 home runs in his last start. Left-handed hitters are batting .266 against Canning this year. Lowe is 1-for-3 in his career against Canning, and that one hit was a home run. We set the line at +405 for Lowe to homer.
Boston has all the momentum and good vibes, but the Yankees have a major edge in starting pitching as they try to avoid the sweep Sunday. Red Sox starter Brayan Bello owns an expected ERA of 5.25 and his 10.7 percent walk rate could spell trouble versus the patient Yanks. Max Fried has been brilliant in almost all of his starts. Back New York to lead after five innings.
This looked a potential crossroads weekend, and so far, so good...at least for the Phils, who have seemingly switched gears with these back-to-back wins at home while allowing just 2 runs in the process. Now they get another crack in their hitter-friendly park at Jose Berrios, who handcuffed the Phils on June 4 north of the border, allowing just 1 run and 4 hits across 6 IP of a 2-1 Toronto win. Philly always likes it chances with Zack Wheeler on the mound, 5-1 across his last seven starts, and if throwing out his bad May 29 effort vs. Atlanta, he's posted an 0.55 ERA in his other five starts since the start of May.
