Drew Lock for Sam Darnold is an obvious downgrade, but Mike Macdonald is such a smart coach, it’s difficult to believe he will not have the Seahawks offense ready to exceed expectations. Primarily, though, this comes down to the defense against Cardinals team that upset the Chargers and may be getting too much love in this road spot. The real concern about this pick is the hook, as this could set up to be a low-scoring game decided by a field goal. Given the pedigree and defensive might, Seattle is worth playing at -3.5 and -4, despite the number.
We'll jump on the ultimate buy-low spot on the polarizing Cardinals WR. Harrison was backed by his teammates and coaches in the assertion that the Chargers, led by former collegiate rival Jim Harbaugh, swarmed him last week, which led to his one-catch outing. Even so, that one reception went for 33 yards and nearly clipped this number. In what is likely a trailing game script, we'll bank on MHJ to clip this low number.
The Seahawks head into this game with Drew Lock at QB, and I thought he looked solid in a tough spot in the opener, going 16 of 22 for 187 yards and a score. This should be an easier matchup, and the Seahawks' OL should block this Cardinals' front better than the Chargers did. The Cards scored 26 but had just one long TD drive, scoring their other TD off a blocked punt. I like the Seahawks defense to control this game and Lock to do enough to get outside this number by the second half, and it'll be tough for Jacoby Brissett to rally for a backdoor cover.
No Sam Darnold for the Seahawks, but Drew Lock is a decent No. 2 option. Seattle won’t take Arizona lightly after the Cardinals’ dominant win over the Chargers. But you never bet against Jacoby Brissett in his first game of a season. After that, have fun. Brissett had a couple INTs dropped by the Chargers, and a blocked punt that offered a free seven points isn’t likely here. Arizona may be better than advertised, but the Seahawks’ defense was great vs. Drake Maye (without star safety Nick Emmanwori, who is back). The Seahawks have a strong history of road success under Mike Macdonald.
I was extremely encouraged by Trey McBride’s usage in Week 1. Despite leading the game wire to wire, the Cardinals deployed a pass heavy gameplan which I expect to once again be the case against a very good Seattle defense. Trey McBride torched Seattle last season and if you look at his splits with Jacoby Brissett under center, the veteran QB clearly loves peppering his elite Tight End with targets. Look for McBride to handle another 10+ targets and I like his chances of racking up another 75+ receiving yards, even in a difficult matchup.
The Seahawks had extra time to get Drew Lock ready for this start against a beatable Arizona defense. Defensively, Seattle held New England to 4.1 yards per play and a miniscule 4.7 yards per pass. Emerging star safety Nick Emmanwori, who missed the season opener with an ankle injury, is practicing and should play Sunday. Back the defending champs to improve to 13-4-1 ATS on the road under Mike Macdonald.
Seattle’s defensive scheme, especially their split-safety and Cover 6 looks, leaves open some key areas in the middle of the field. These coverages create soft spots between the deep-half safety near the sideline and the zone defenders underneath—exactly where Arizona likes to use Trey McBride. In Week 1, McBride lined up in the slot more than any other Cardinals pass-catcher, and according to Next Gen Stats, seven of his nine catches came from those inside positions. Over his last four games against Seattle, McBride has made the most of these coverages, posting lines of 12 catches for 133 yards, 7 for 70, 7 for 52, and 9 for 127—averaging 95.5 yards per game. A controlled environment makes this line closer to 69 yards.
Maybe Arizona isn't all that bad -- some offensive talent there led by Jeremiyah Love, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride. The Cards put up 26 on a good Chargers defense away in Week 1 so surely they can get to 17 on Sunday in the home opener. Seattle's defense probably isn't capable of being better than last year's No. 1 scoring unit and Arizona hit at least 20 points in both games. Our model has 18 points. OK then. Maybe Drew Lock throws a pick-six for the Hawks.
