This may be the last time we can place a wager one of the Discords favorite teams this season. Yes, there are two other experts on them but we’re rolling with our beloved RedHawks. SMU's BJ Edwards is confirmed out tonight but Corey Washington is now playing. You can expect a rowdy bunch of Miami Ohio fans tonight as their campus is only 50 minutes away and Coach Steele hinted at the environment as a semi-home game. The pace will be there for the RedHawks efficient offense and even though they haven’t faced top-50 competition to this point, they should find success against SMU’s lackluster defense.
Once again, I'm drinking the Miami kool-aid. This is basically a home game for the RedHawks, only an hour away from campus. At 31-1, Miami has something to prove considering their strength of schedule was among the worst in the country. While I wouldn't be shocked if they won the game outright, this line is disrespectful, especially considering that SMU lost 5 of 6 heading into this First Four game.
Miami (Ohio)’s spacing and shooting should translate even against a power conference defense, in part because SMU’s defensive quality down the stretch of the regular season might have been closer to the MAC than the ACC. The Mustangs ranked 16th out of 18 teams in defensive efficiency in conference play, and gave up 80 points or more in half of their ACC games. SMU does have an advantage with 7-2 center Samet Yigitoglu against Miami’s front line, and the RedHawks defense has been part of the blame for some close calls late in the year and the MAC Tournament loss. Combine those factors with fast tempo and a rowdy crowd for the in-state RedHawks in Dayton and it's easy to envision a high-scoring affair.
It's the First Four of the NCAA Tournament between SMU and Miami of Ohio, and the game is being played in Dayton, Ohio. This game is a better option for Miami than being left out. The mounting pressure was building for Miami. The loss lets them reset and just ball. The fact remains that this team was the No. 1 shooting team in the nation at 52.4%, and they were 9th nationally shooting 39.2% from 3-point range. They've been the hunted all season, and now they become the hunters. They're getting points and lots of them. SMU is a good shooting team as well, but they lost five of their last six games. I bet that Miami shoots better and wins this game.
