If there’s a backup quarterback that’s fresh and ready to go it’s Tyrod Taylor. Since 2022, Taylor has had just four NFL starts. Taylor will need to air it out with how well Tampa Bay has hindered the ground game. They shut down the Falcons to an average of 2.5 yards a carry, and the Texans to fifty seven yards from their running backs. Look for Wilson to have a solid overall game enough to clear his yardage prop.
Is it really the worst news for the Jets that Justin Fields has been ruled out of this game at Tampa Bay, with vet Tyrod Taylor slated to take snaps vs. the Bucs? Indeed, it might be a plus. There's something else curious about this matchup, to do with the Bucs, who for the fifth straight year have broken 2-0 from the gate...but they've also lost and failed to cover their third game the past four seasons, too. Last year, an 0-2 Denver came into Tampa and took out the 2-0 Bucs handily, 26-7. Tampa Bay has been cutting it very close with late-game Baker Mayfield heroics, and even in normal circumstances, laying a full 7 with the Bucs looks risky. Play Jets
With most other sportsbooks offering +6.5, this line stands out. The Bucs are coming off a physical Monday nighter on the road and could be vulnerable after their 11th-hour-plus win. QB Tyrod Taylor steps in for the ailing Justin Fields, but the drop-off is marginal. This marks the veteran’s 58th start, which will send him under or over his .500 SU record. The Jets are ground-oriented anyway, as indicated by their No. 5 rush ranking. They appear the healthier side, with Tampa Bay sending OT Luke Goedeke and OG Cody Mauch to injured reserve. QB Baker Mayfield, who absorbed a beating in Houston, should beware.
This bet comes down to the Bucs' missing three starting offensive linemen, and Tampa Bay playing on a short week versus a desperate Jets' team. Baker Mayfield has delivered game-winning drives, but he's been very fortunate leading up to them, with zero interceptions on six turnover-worthy throws. Tyrod Taylor has made a habit of overcoming expectations, and I like New York to keep this close.
The Tampa Bay Bucs won't apologize to anyone nor should they for back to back road wins kicking off the season. However in those games Tampa had to fight tooth and nail for 60 full minutes and is about to show the wear and tear. Tampa is expected to be down 4 OL on their two deep this weekend and combine that with banged up skill position talent it's far from the perfect recipe to win by margin against the winless Jets. New York was embarrassing last week; no reason to sugarcoat it but both coaches and players have said the right things after the blowout loss to Buffalo. Situations and cluster injuries make bets in the NFL and we have a glorious one here.
Baker Mayfield's stock has soared after pulling off a 4th quarter comeback on Monday in Houston. Now they are at home on a short week, hosting an unfamiliar opponent with a date with the Eagles on deck. Over the last 10 seasons, 0-2 teams vs teams with at least one win, cover the number over 60% of the time. And it makes sense because public perception is often skewed so early in the season. Justin Fields has been ruled out for this game yet the line has dipped in many places. I made this number Buccaneers -5. I'll gladly take the full seven points or better.
The Jets' defensive line, led by Quinnen Williams, Jermaine Johnson, and Will McDonald, has been their most consistent unit through two weeks. Baker Mayfield might run into some trouble, especially after having a challenging game against the Texans, where he faced a lot of pressure from Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter. Veteran backup Tyrod Taylor provides a stabilizing presence that could surprise the Tampa Bay defense, which may take him for granted. The Bucs played a physical game on Monday Night Football and now return home on short rest missing both starting tackles.
We don't know who is going to play quarterback for the Jets right now, but I hope it's Tyrod Taylor and I think it will be with players usually missing a week after suffering a concussion. I don't want the Jets relying so much on the run game against this Bucs defensive front. Tampa Bay is 2-0 and feeling good heading into what is supposed to be an easy matchup, and I can see them coming out sleepy and failing to cover after picking up multiple key injuries on Monday. I think the lookahead of Bucs -5 was a line that made more sense.
