The Wizards are disaster, and OKC, though on a back to back, is riding the momentum of a major energy win over the Clippers. This is a team starting to feel itself as a true contender but is young enough to not take nights off. Bet the blowout.
Not thrilled with laying such a big price but the Thunder is certainly capable of extending a margin as it did last night vs. the Clippers. All hands are on deck and SGA hit the ground running after the All-Star break with 31 points. Meanwhile the Wiz was whipped in Denver and has had a bumpy go in second nights of back-to-backs (just 1-4 vs. line last five), and our suspicion is that the last seven weeks of the season could get borderline ugly in D.C., especially with the Pistons ready to bypass them and leave Washington with the league's worst record. OKC should be somewhat on its toes after being pushed in a 136-128 win at Cap One back on Jan. 8. Play Thunder
Credit to Tyus Jones who is playing excellent basketball recently despite playing on arguably the worst team in the Association. Jones has dished out at least 14 assists in three consecutive games and is averaging 13.4 PPG and 10.2 APG over his last 12 games, with blistering shooting splits of 48/53/100. To put these numbers into perspective, Jones is averaging 12 PPG and 7 APG on 50/43/77 this season. This is a great indicator that Jones is a regression candidate and clearly performing above expectations. Jones gets a tough draw against an OKC team that are ranked 5th in Total Defense and are a whopping 16 point favorites tonight which could certainly lead to limited minutes in a potential blowout.
Holmgren is becoming quite the force. And against a bad opponent that has no answers for his combo of skill and height, 23.5 seems quite charitable. Grab it now before it goes up. Over
Yeah its the second night of back to backs but OKC is at home and they won handily Thursday night and this kid is going to continue to dominate in the second half. The Wiz can't defend anyone but especially not bigs. They lack quality and depth inside. Lobs all day. Plenty of trips to the line. Even in a blowout he can get 20 here without breaking a heavy sweat. Scored 31 on WSH in 1st meeting (11/14 from field) on the road Jan. 8, and that was when Wiz still had Daniel Gafford inside to put up some fight.
Chet Holmgren is having a fantastic rookie season for a Thunder squad that are 38-17, good for the third best record in the NBA. Holmgren has been as good as advertised and gets a cupcake matchup against a Wizards team who have been downright awful and have lost nine consecutive games. The Wizards have been absolutely torched by opposing Centers and surrender the most points (26.77 PPG) and the most rebounds (18.26) to opposing Centers. This is a dream matchup for Centers. The Thunder are 16 point favorites but Holmgren is capable of getting home even in limited minutes.
This is a perfect storm - one of the true premier shooting teams in the NBA - from the floor in general and especially from 3 - against a team that hasn't been able to guard the perimeter in years. Wizards defense is even more janky now with yet another experimental new starting five, and their lack of size provides east dishes for lay-ups and high percentage shots. Yeah, SGA is going to shoot plenty himself but there will be so many match-up options that look good when he kicks the ball around, and the Thunder didn't miss a beat shooting the ball Thursday after the ASG going 56% from the field and 49% from 3. Those totals will go up. SGA averages 7/G
Holmgren averages a robust .25 rebounds/minute and even if this game is a total blowout, I figure he sees around 30 minutes. He's averaged 8.6 rebounds/game his last 10 games and the all star layoff had to help his legs. The Wizards were giving up about 50 rebounds/game the final two weeks going into the break - exacerbated by the trade of Daniel Gafford - and gave up 60 at Denver in their first game back Thursday. Holmgren's size inside will be a major problem for a team with major issues on the boards and on defense in general. He's a big match-up problem for them here and the Wizards miss plenty of shots to keep him busy with opportunities to cash this
