San Diego has beaten Cleveland the last five times they met. Cleveland is actually a better road team than at home, and overall they average only 3.96 runs per game. The Padres won King's last start against the then-hot Astros when he only allowed one run in six innings. Williams had his streak of 10 strikeouts or more end at five consecutive games after the White Sox beat him in his last start. Cleveland has lost four of his last five starts. Padres to win.
This is a low K Line for Michael King whose strikeout numbers are down compared to previous seasons but 3.5 is a very attractive number in a plus matchup. The Guardians have been striking out a lot and King has strong career numbers against their projected lineup. I like his chances of getting in 6+ innings and at least 4 Ks in the process.
I like the Padres' chances to at least match the Guardians on the scoreboard after 15 outs. Gavin Williams has been solid, but his hard-hit rate and barrel percentage are both near the bottom of the league—just the 3rd and 6th percentiles. On the other side, the Guardians’ projected lineup hasn’t fared well against Michael King, hitting only .175 with a .453 OPS in 40 career at-bats. It all brings to mind old-school hockey, back before 2005, when a tie was still possible and grabbing a half-goal could mean cashing your ticket.
