Justin Herbert has been mighty impressive in two starts. But you know what he has not done since he started leading the Chargers? Won ... or covered. Los Angeles is on the road in primetime against a New Orleans team averaging 31 points per game that knows how to attack inexperienced quarterbacks -- even if its defense has struggled early this season. The Saints have been successful without Michael Thomas before, whereas I'm not sure the Chargers will be able to cover without the efficient Austin Ekeler and (more importantly) two more starters out along the offensive line. New Orleans at home on Monday night? Book it.
Saints coach Sean Payton tinkered with the offense in last week’s comeback win over Detroit. The 25 pass attempts by QB Drew Brees were his third-fewest in 10 years. Expect Payton to continue his new approach and equal or surpass the 42 rushing attempts of last week. Additionally, Chargers QB Justin Herbert is learning the pressure of officially being named starter is much different than proving yourself off the bench.Grab the Saints.
I've said it before that no sportsbooks should allow a spread to land right on 7 (or 3) because what fun is a push? This line had been Saints -7.5 for much of last week. The Bolts are without top running back Austin Ekeler, and three of their five starting offensive linemen are out too. Yes, the Saints will be missing No. 1 wideout Michael Thomas again, but they should be able to win by 10 or so against a rookie QB in Justin Herbert. New Orleans has been a money team in October for a few years.
Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert is making his first primetime start and he won't have Austin Ekeler to support him. The elusive Ekeler made 17 catches and was averaging 5.1 yards per carry before getting hurt. The Saints are 37-14 ATS in their last 51 October games. In this matchup they should excel, in part because the Chargers can't cover running backs out of the backfield. Lay it.
Justin Herbert could have a big game against this Saints defense, which just gave up 29 points to the Lions. Losing Austin Ekeler hurts, but I think the Chargers score enough here to cover.
