With it looking like this spread may inch up another half point, I'm locking in the Seahawks here. I'm not yet bought into the idea that the Patriots are a well-oiled machine under Cam Newton when New England managed 21 points at home against a porous Dolphins defense that just gave up 31 to the Bills in Miami. The Seahawks are a well-oiled machine with a ton of offensive playmakers. I don't take much away from their beatdown of a bad Falcons defense, either. But on a Sunday night in Week 2, I'm siding with the known quantity, more weapons and a quarterback who is just as -- if not more -- talented than Newton.
Last week, the Patriots showed us their new offense with Cam Newton. Run, run and run again to shorten the game. New England took the second-highest amount of time between plays in Week 1, trailing only Jacksonville. Seattle was fourth-slowest at 31.6 seconds. New England's defense still is very good and will plan well for Russell Wilson.
The Seahawks looked pretty good against Atlanta in Week 1, but I think that was more of a knock on the Falcons defense than anything. I do think Seattle should be favored, but I would make this line -2 or -2.5. Cam Newton has a massive chip on his shoulder this season as he works with the best coach in the history of the league. I like the Patriots to keep it within 4 in primetime in what will play more like a neutral site game.
This is a great matchup that features two excellent quarterbacks. What this game ultimately will come down to is defense. Look for the Seahawks to try and use S Jamal Adams as a spy on Patriots QB Cam Newton. That may slow down New England's offense just a bit, but the bigger story will be how its defense handles Russell Wilson. Last week, Miami's offense didn't pose much of a threat against the Patriots. They'll face a tougher test versus Wilson and Seattle's dynamic offense.
Is Seattle a legit Super Bowl contender after one week? Because they'd have to be to stop me from taking Bill Belichick and more than a field goal. The Seahawks caught the Falcons defense off-guard with an un-Seahawks-like offensive plan last week, but that's not going to work two weeks in a row, especially against the greatest defensive mind of all time. After putting a run-heavy offense on tape last week, the Patriots could open things a bit more here to turn the tables on the Seahawks. When it comes to Belichick's Patriots getting blown out, I'll believe it when I see it.
The Seahawks finally turned Russell Wilson loose and he threw four TDs last week. He's got great weapons. I don't think Cam Newton is going to do much against this Seattle defense. The Seahawks' linebackers will be all over him. Lay the points.
This is a tale of two offenses. The Seahawks and quarterback Russell Wilson looked sharp last week in a pass-first attack, and I wouldn't be surprised if they stuck with the same plan on Sunday night. Meanwhile the Patriots are still making the transition from Tom Brady's arm to Cam Newton's legs. Their new-look offense will face a much tougher test in Seattle than it did against Miami.
