GameSense & Problem Gambling Support for Alberta online casinos
From quizzes to free gambling counsellors, GameSense offers plenty of tools to help Alberta players make informed decisions and gamble responsibly

Alberta iGaming regulators are heavily promoting responsible gambling leading up to today's commercial market launch on July 13, 2026. Part of these efforts includes establishing GameSense, the province's centralized self-exclusion program. But GameSense is about more than just self-exclusion—it also educates online gamblers about responsible gaming and provides other helpful resources. Let's go over the finer points of GameSense and everything it offers players.
Emphasis on educational resources
Originally developed by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, GameSense isn't about convincing everybody to avoid betting sites and online casinos in Canada. Instead, it seeks to keep gambling fun by teaching how to play responsibly.
Its educational tools can be found on its website under the "Know the Game" and "Play Better" sections. Players wanting to know the facts and odds for slots, for example, would simply visit Know the Game and select Slots.
The Play Better area of the site provides advice on casino game volatility, managing your play, the house advantage, and skill vs. chance.
Self-assessment, quizzes & games
Another way that GameSense helps gamblers play smart is by offering a self-assessment test and interactive games. The self-assessment test features a series of questions where players answer 0-10. For example, it might ask for a rating from 0-10 on "Sometimes I lose track of time when gambling."
The interactive games are meant to present responsible gambling in an entertaining format. For instance, there's a quiz that asks true-or-false questions like, "Some slots are 'hot' and due for a big jackpot."
Another example of GameSense's interactive games is Red Light, Green Light. This one requires players to swipe gaming-related cards left (red light/no) or right (green light/yes). One example of a card shows, "Play for Fun, Not to Make Money."Â
Support resources
Anybody who's struggling to manage their bankroll when playing at Alberta gambling sites can find a variety of support channels through GameSense.
Players can connect directly with a GameSense advisor by using the website's live chat feature or calling 1-866-815-0222. These specialists are there to educate players on gambling odds, time management, bankroll management, and Game Break, which we'll cover later.
Here are other resources that can be found through GameSense:
- GamTalk
- Gam-Anon
- Gambling Support B.C.
- Gamblers Anonymous
- Journal of Gambling Issues
Game Break self-exclusion program
The heart of Alberta's centralized self-exclusion system is Game Break. Run through GameSense, this program lets players opt out of Alberta's online gambling market for:
- Six months
- One year
- Two years
- Three years
Once a player opts out using Game Break, their access to the province's iGaming market is shut off for the specified period. Users can't reverse the decision; they simply need to wait until the time period is up.
These players won't receive direct marketing materials from Alberta online casinos, sportsbooks, or poker rooms either during this time. They also have the option to be contacted by a gambling support professional at no charge.
