Purdue is still missing its best long-range shooter, Sasha Stefanovic, but the Boilermakers are currently playing their best ball of the season. They have won five of their last six games (only loss to Michigan) and covering six of their last seven. Their current run has road wins at Ohio State (swept Buckeyes), Michigan State and Indiana. They also beat Maryland 73-70 on Christmas day.
The spread has moved in Maryland’s direction, perhaps with the realization that Purdue three-point marksman Sasha Stefanovic will miss another game from Covid-19 protocols. The Boilermakers did not miss him Saturday in winning their fifth outright in the last six by nailing numerous threes. Maryland is still seeking its first Big Ten straight-up win at home. The Boilers’ ultra-tall duo, Trevion Williams and Zach Edey, are problematic for the Terps’ smallish lineup.
The Terps went small in the second half of their game at Purdue and nearly pulled off the upset. They'll use the same strategy from the outset tonight. I think they get their first home conference win against a Boilermakers team that played Saturday and then had issues with their flight to Maryland. The Terps have been resting and preparing since last Wednesday. This is just one of those spots in the Big Ten schedule that heavily favors the hosts.
Purdue is ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time this season. The Boilers are coming off a big win against Minnesota, covering the spread by 16.5 points. However, Maryland should be pumped up in playing a ranked opponent at home, and the Terps are on extra rest as they haven't taken the court since last Wednesday.
