Alberta online casino launch in July 2026: Which casinos are expected to go live?

Alberta online casinos are projected to launch on July 13, following regulators' January opening of registrations for potential casino operators to launch this year. Lawmakers passed Bill 48 – also known as the iGaming Alberta Act – in May 2025. Some important sections have already been put into effect via proclamation in hopes of preventing setbacks of a projected Summer launch of Alberta casino apps.

The provincial legislative assembly got the ball rolling for legal online casinos in Alberta by passing Bill 16 in May 2024, which amended the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act to authorise an expanded regulated online gambling industry. By May 2025, the government passed the iGaming Alberta Act.

The final approval has already come, as Bill 48 was proposed by a government that features a majority of the supportive United Conservative Party.

Bill 48 passed, intending to open up what has been a monopoly on regulated online gambling in the province. PlayAlberta has operated as a government-run Alberta online casino since 2020, featuring online slots, table games, live dealer games and internet lottery offerings like instant-win scratchers and draw games.

Regulators in the province posted an update on their website that they expect to launch online casinos in Alberta on July 13 – the same date grey market platforms were told to stop operating by.

The window is open for applications to be submitted for Alberta online casino licensing, with some approved operators like Caesars Palace already accepting pre-registrations from new users. More than 30 companies have applied to operate in the province. 

The countdown has begun to July 13 for a potential 2026 launch of online casinos in Alberta. Before then, regulators must make final approvals on license applications and deliver rules to those operators. 

Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally noted in early 2026 that he expected Alberta online casinos to go live in this year. That launch date has been set for July 13. 

Technically, Alberta online casino gambling has been legal since PlayAlberta launched as a government-run platform in 2020. An open, competitive market, though, is on the horizon after the passage of the iGaming Alberta Act, with more than 30 companies expected to participate, with some leaving the "grey market" of unregulated online gaming in Alberta. 

It appears Alberta is following Ontario in the number of licenses it will provide to online casino operators, with more than 30 applicants already reported. It's reasonable to estimate that many of the biggest brands will apply for a license once the market goes live. 

There is still no clear indication of how many licenses Alberta regulators will issue. As the province may mirror the Ontario model, though, that could mean 80+ legal online casinos in Alberta when the process is complete.

Logically speaking, it would make sense that online casinos in Alberta would allow customers to sign up before they launch. However, it is not yet known if that will be a possibility for every operator. 

At the very least, potential users in the province will likely see a ramp-up in marketing and advertising from incoming operators. For example, Caesars has begun marketing pre-registration for new users. 

There are benefits to creating accounts at several online casinos in Alberta.

For starters, each operator's library of games differs. BetMGM Casino, for example, features slots exclusive to them, while FanDuel Casino and DraftKings Casino have their own games not found on other platforms.

Along those lines, some games may have better return-to-player (RTP) rates than at other online casinos. These RTP rates, usually provided by game developers, represent the amount of money players can expect to win playing a certain game over time. The details of how Alberta will issue online casino licenses remain to be seen. However, throughout the entire process of getting a bill across the finish line and as provincial leaders continue to hash out those details, they have reiterated that the Alberta online casino industry will closely resemble that of Ontario.

By examining Ontario, then, we can theoretically gain a better outlook on what the Alberta market will look like. For example, in Ontario, there is no need for online casinos to have a land-based partner. Rather, operators just need to apply for and be granted a license by the regulatory body. In Alberta, that would be the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission.

Without the need for a land-based partner, in theory, that would mean the Alberta online casino industry could certainly reach the total seen in Ontario.

That fund is used to support public services and government operations. That includes providing funding for government operations, departments and offices as well as infrastructure projects and social programs in the province.

In addition, the Alberta General Revenue Fund funds community-based initiatives, goods and services purchased by government departments, as well as local government buildings, municipal services and planning.

Alberta officials are preparing to launch, and Minister Nally has said in various interviews with Canadian media that online casino operators will be required to offer Responsible Gaming tools to players and follow strict advertising rules. The RG framework includes required player protections, including system-wide self-exclusion and financial and time-based limiting.

In every other U.S. and Canadian jurisdiction where legal online casinos operate, they have a suite of responsible gambling tools to help players stay within their limits as best as possible.
