In just a few weeks, legal online casinos in Alberta will go live, with officials having long targeted July 13 as the launch date. Many of the world's most popular brands will lay roots in the province, but what can residents expect as the go-live date nears?

For months, lawmakers, regulators and stakeholders have had one date circled on their calendar, and that July 13 day is fast approaching for the launch of legal Alberta online casinos.

Thanks to the 2025 passage of Bill 48, commonly known as the iGaming Alberta Act, the province will go from a single regulated online operator to dozens of platforms available to residents. PlayAlberta has been live as a government-run online casino in Alberta since 2020.

Broadening the iGaming market began in May 2024 after the Alberta legislative assembly passed Bill 16 to amend the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act to authorise the expansion of legal online gambling in the province and become the second region, alongside Ontario, to have a competitive online casino market.

After the iGaming Alberta Act was passed a year later, regulators then set an expected launch of online casinos on July 13, 2026. Not coincidentally, that date was also the same date put in place for grey market operators to cease operations.

As regulated by the Alberta iGaming Corporation, online casinos in Alberta will pay an estimated 22% tax rate to benefit the Alberta General Revenue Fund, which will help finance government operations, public services, community initiatives and local governments.

There would seemingly be plenty of operators contributing to that fund, with Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis listing nearly 50 registrants to operate iGaming platforms in the province – including some of the top online casinos in Canada and the U.S.

Among them are renowned and well-established brands such as Caesars Palace Online Casino, BetMGM Casino, DraftKings Casino, FanDuel Casino and bet365 Casino.

Here are a few things to know before regulated Alberta online casinos go live on July 13.

Residents will need to be 18 years or older and otherwise eligible to play Alberta online casino games, and they must also be physically located in the province.

To create an account, users will need to submit their full name, birth date and residential address. They may also have to upload a copy of their driver's licence or passport to verify their identity and eligibility to play casino games online.

Many customers may wonder if they will need to pay taxes on any winnings from online casino gameplay. According to the Income Tax Act, they will not. That is, unless they claim winnings as professional gambling income.

One of the more overlooked aspects of legal online casinos in Alberta (and something that users should take full advantage of) are the responsible gambling tools that operators are required to offer. These tools, such as setting limits on how much money players deposit, wager or lose over a set period of time, ensure that customers stay within their financial means and keep regulated casino games a form of entertainment.

Responsible Gaming: Must be 18+ or the age of majority in your province or territory of residence to participate (19+ in Ontario). Please play responsibly. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, support is available through local responsible gaming resources, including ConnexOntario (https://www.connexontario.ca) for residents of Ontario and Alberta Health Services (https://www.albertahealthservices.ca) for residents of Alberta. Availability of online casino services may vary by province or territory and is subject to applicable laws and regulatory approvals.
