The Jets had no issue with their quarterback change in last week’s home rout over Chicago. But that was a Bears squad using its backup QB on the road. Can New York produce on the road and prove it can be a true playoff team? I believe so as the Vikings were more fortunate than dominant in their win against New England. Take the Jets in a close one.
There’s really only one stat that shows the Vikings to be a better team than the Jets this season: Record (Vikings 9-2, Jets 7-4). Otherwise, the Jets are better in DVOA overall (9th to 24th), on offense (18th to 20th), on defense (4th to 23rd) and on special teams (17th to 20th). The Jets are plus-54 in point differential, and the Vikings plus-5. And that’s with Zach Wilson starting most of the season. Mike White isn’t likely to fare as well as he did last week, but his teammates couldn’t be more thrilled that he’s now starting. Ultimately, the Jets defense is the difference, and should be able to at least keep it close. Grab the points.
The Jets boast the fifth-best pressure rate yet do it without blitzing; their 15.1 percent blitz rate is second-lowest in the NFL. Now New York's defensive line welcomes back Sheldon Rankins, who's been out since Week 9 with an elbow injury. Minnesota won't have left tackle Christian Darrisaw (concussion), meaning Kirk Cousins could face heavy pressure Sunday. This is another good matchup for Mike White, as the Vikings will sit back in zone defense. Take the points.
The Vikings shook off an embarrassing loss to the Cowboys to beat the Patriots in primetime, but their defense continued to struggle in the game, giving up 7.4 yards per play to a New England offense that had been held under 300 yards in four straight games. The Jets had a similarly efficient day against a bad Bears defense after transitioning to Mike White at QB, but this matchup should allow him to continue to have success moving the ball. On the other side, Kirk Cousins led his team to 10 points combined against the Eagles and Cowboys, so I'm not sure how sustainable his performance against New England is when facing elite defenses. The Jets have a great chance to pull off the upset.
