There's a 100% chance of rain in Cincinnati on Sunday, according to weather.com (as of Friday), and the lowest that dips from 1-4 p.m. ET is an 85% chance. It's going to be wet, folks. Will the NFL's No. 20 (Browns) and No. 30 (Bengals) ranked offenses be able to score many points in such weather? Doesn't seem likely. Take the Under.
The Bengals have won only one game this season but they’ve covered the spread as often as the Browns. One team may have been underrated a bit while the other was certainly overrated and overhyped. But I’m not going to hold a grudge against the Browns, who have lost their last two games against two very good offenses. The Browns bounce back and close out the season with a win and cover.
Assessing motivation for non-playoff teams in Week 17 is dicey, but it’s hardly going out on a limb to suspect that Cleveland will be uninspired against this one-win foe. The Browns have had attitude issues in more meaningful games, so count on something to surface here. Cincinnati, with the No. 1 draft pick sewn up, can play to win. QB Andy Dalton, facing an injury-depleted Browns D-line, could be auditioning for his future. The Bengals are expected to take a QB, which would make the veteran expendable.
Call me a sucker, but I keep lining up to back the one-win Bengals. Last week's game against the Dolphins was the first real dud for the Cincy defense in a while, and the offense showed some fight in rallying back to send the game to overtime. With the No. 1 pick locked up, the Bengals can go out and give their all to beat the Browns, a team that continues to struggle on defense while suffering from turmoil in the locker room regarding who wants out. Cincy showed their the better team in the first meeting, which they lost despite outgaining Cleveland 451-33 in yardage. This time they take care of business and get the win.
To say it's been a disappointing season in Ohio would be an understatement. Both the Bengals and - more importantly - the Browns performed well below expectations. The only saving grace for Cleveland is the fact they have the more talented team between the two. And talent alone should be enough for them to close out the season with a victory.
