With Alvin Kamara expected to play, I like the Saints as a small road dog here and actually think New Orleans should be favored coming into the game. For some reason, no one seems willing to respect its defense and continues doubting it with Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback. Yes, Drew Brees is the superior player, but Bridgewater is no slouch. If the Saints can somewhat contain Leonard Fournette, they should be able to get to Gardner Minshew and win this outright, but I'll take the field goal.
The Saints are 4-1, including 3-0 since losing Drew Brees, and they've covered 21 of their last 29 road games overall. Their defense against the run has improved dramatically; they won't let Leonard Fournette run wild. Take the points.
The Jaguars are being seriously undervalued at home in this spot. Yes, the Saints have played well without Drew Brees, and Teddy Bridgewater deserves a lot of credit. But they aren't going on the road and covering here.
The Under has gone 7-2 in both the Saints' last nine games on the road and the Jaguars' last nine games at home. While I am a little worried taking it here with Gardner Minshew lighting up the competition on the road the last two weeks, I think we can trust a Saints D that allowed less than 260 yards to each of their last two opponents. And the New Orleans offense should look to grind out long drives on the ground against the worst rush D in the league in yards per carry.
Another week goes by without the Saints defense getting credit for its level of play. While the offense has started to pick up the pace, it's the defense that continues to provide ample opportunities to do so. Jacksonville's ground game has been the catalyst for its success. Yes, Gardner Minshew has been good, but it's been the run that has set the pace. The Saints are one of the best run defenses in the NFL; they'll make this a Minshew-vs-Bridgewater game, and that's one the Saints can win.
Not surprisingly, New Orleans coach Sean Payton has effectively slid in QB Teddy Bridgewater as Drew Brees’ temporary stand-in. The Saints are 3-0 straight-up with the backup. Of course, any QB can make do with superb WR Michael Thomas as his main target. N’awlins is a road warrior, having covered 21 of the last 29 away games, and is 4-0 ATS in the series lately.
