Seattle is coming off being swept by the Miami Marlins, as they head into their final series before the All Star break against the Rays. At .500 the Mariners have done a great job at avoiding an extended losing streak. Currently at three losses in a row, they have not had a losing streak beyond that since April 17th. Veteran pitcher Nick Martinez has also struggled the last two seasons against Seattle where he has lasted just four innings and 4 2/3. Back Seattle here.
Luis Castillo has progress of late, but still owns a 4.79 ERA and 1.33 WHIP on the season. He’s also allowed his opposing hitters to own a .255 average but Tampa Bay has been hitting .267 at home. Nick Martinez has been excellent at home, 5-1 SU with a 3.04 ERA and the Rays have won 13 of his 17 starts this season. Seattle is only hitting .236 and still seven games under .500 on the road. This line is a little fishy but with the better starter on the bump, offensive production and consistency, the price is to good to pass on the Rays.
Luis Castillo's strikeouts have dipped over the last couple of seasons and he faces off with one of the tougher teams to strikeout in the Tampa Bay Rays. Castillo is in just the 40th percentile for whiff rate, but he does get some hitters chasing out of the zone to help his strikeout numbers. The issue with that is this Rays team chases pitches at a low rate, and when they do they make contact at the highest rate in the league. Their lineup puts the ball in play and Castillo is allowing hitters to put the ball in play at a 90% rate when in the zone. He's also had a tougher time striking out lefties, and will likely get a lefty heavy order.
