Oakland’s Alex Wood has a rough first outing of the season. He allowed seven hits and six earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched. He also is only in the sixth percentile for strikeouts. Brayan Bello had a good first outing for the Red Sox, five innings, five hits with two earned runs allowed. With Oakland sending Esteury Ruiz to Triple-A, there isn’t much offense left as they’re hitting .200 with a .272 OBS at home. As stated yesterday, the Red Sox are the far superior team with the better bullpen.
I see Mike Barner and I think alike -- I was 2-0 on SL's first-ever MLB props on Monday by the way. Wood lasting more than five innings against that Red Sox lineup? He only made it through 3.1 in his first outing as Wood was shelled by Cleveland. Even if Wood pitches OK, he could be at 90 pitches or so by the end of the fifth and surely wouldn't come back out. And there's always an injury possibility.
Alex Wood was not sharp in his first start of the season. He was roughed up by the Guardians, allowing six runs over 3 1/3 innings. He made 29 appearances for the Giants last season, 12 of which were starts. He did not perform well, finishing with a 4.33 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. He recorded more than 15 outs in a game just one time all season. With the expectation that he likely won’t pitch deep into many games for the entirety of this season, the under is the way to go here against a Red Sox lineup that produced nine runs against the Athletics on Monday.
We plead guilty to picking on the poor A's, for whom we actually hold a soft spot from years and decades past. But in four of their five games thus far, they've not only lost but been outscored a combined 33-7, and the popgun offense was blanked for the second time in last night's 9-0 loss. The Bosox are not about to pass up this opportunity and look forward to taking swings vs. Alex Wood, who was bombed last Thursday vs. Cleveland. Meanwhile, Tuesday starter Brayan Bello was good enough (5 IP, 5 hits, 2 ER) for Boston in its opening-night win at Seattle, and the Bosox continue to impress with their speed. Play Red Sox on Run Line
This seems light by about 20-25 cents. The Sox are up big early on the A's Monday as we write this, which could mean the bullpen is in great shape Tuesday if needed behind Bryan Bello -- and it might not be needed against this A's lineup. Their starter, Alex Wood, whom I always confuse with Alex Cobb, was blasted in his first start by Cleveland. We are just going to need to identify the 60 times or so the A's might win and then stay away. Oakland will have zero home-field advantage, though. Doesn't feel like this is a worry unless Boston sits a few key hitters for some reason.
The Sox starter should benefit from the huge ballpark and the fact that Boston actually has an outfield now that can really go get the ball. Alex Wood looks like a shell of what he was a few years ago and seems to struggling with his stuff and his confidence. Rough combination. The overwhelming apathy in Oakland (and rightfully so) creates an awkward setting. This will feel like a Sox home game and they have their Opening Day starter on the bump vs a 100-plus loss team. I'll take it.
