It was a mixed bag of a road trip for the Astros, but the bottom line is they went 5-4 and now they finally get to play a home game. They opened the season by taking three of four from the Angels in Anaheim while outscoring the Halos 20-10. The Angels have won five of six, but it was against the Marlins and Rangers. Plus, they'll be without Mike Trout in this one. Astros starter Luis Garcia was about a run and a half better at home last season (2.73 ERA at home; 4.24 on the road), too.
The Angels' Michael Lorenzen looked amazing against a weak Marlins lineup in his first start, allowing two hits and one run in six innings while striking out seven and walking none. I love that stat line. The Astros' Luis Garcia didn’t allow a run in four innings against Arizona's awful lineup. Mike Trout (hand) may miss the game, but I'm on the Angels because of their momentum. They’ve won three straight and five of their last six, hitting homers regularly. The Astros are in a scoring drought. Angels to win.
Last home opener in MLB is in Houston tonight. Both teams will be missing key players, Angels should be without Trout, Astros should be without Ryan Pressly who is on the IL. Yordan Alvarez is also expected to be back for this game as well. Michael Lorenzen was very good in his debut but that was against the Marlins. Luis Garcia only allowed 2 hits in 4 IP in his first start. He was also much better at home last season at 6-5 with a 2.73 ERA. Garcia didn’t pitch too well against the Angels last season, but he did improve against them as the season went along. The Astros were 7-3 at home against the Angels last season and they are 16-7 against them in their last 23 games overall. Take the Astros at home.
This may only go up tomorrow if/when Mike Trout is ruled out for the Halos. He was hit on the hand Sunday and had to leave. X-rays were negative, but I'd think he would at least get Monday off. Meanwhile, the Astros are expected to activate DH Yordan Alvarez from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of the game. Last year, he hit .364 against Angels pitching. Stros starting pitcher Luis Garcia makes his 2022 home debut and had a 2.39 ERA there last year.
