Past Picks
I actually looked at an AirBNB in Strasbourg a few years back. Alas, COVID got in the way. I just imagine great beer and sauerkraut, which I strangely love as an otherwise picky eater. Although I think I thought this was Germany so what do I know. Strasbourg is unbeaten in three straight at home, but per usual I don't care who wins. Give us a draw. Few knocks -- yes, I came across knocks on a UK site and I like it -- on the visitors and one suspension. Guess I don't get why we are getting the + on the home side. But I don't speak French so ...
The current goal-leader in Ligue 1 goes by the name of Joaquin Panichelli. He's currently averaging a goal every 96 minutes of play time and has helped propel this Strasbourg team to the top half of the table. He's not doing this alone, however, as Racing have the second most goals in the league, only falling behind Marseille. This is a club under manager Liam Rosenior who prioritizes attack above all else. They do not care who is across the pitch, they go for goals no matter what. This is one of the clubs in Europe I will always bet the over 2.5 if the line is playable.
This bet is less about backing OGC Nice and more about fading Auxerre. Auxerre had a good season last year, finishing 11th on the Ligue 1 table, and put together a relatively fierce attack. This season, however, they look like a shadow of their former selves. They are one of the only two clubs in Ligue 1 with less than 10 goals. They're along side Angers which is not good company to keep. Nice have a solid front line and an average defense, but average should be enough here. I have Nice winning this one with multiple goals scored along the way.
Monaco at home are favorites to win this match. I understand the logic behind that, but I don't agree with it though. While Lens was able to rest for a full week after demolishing Lorient, Monaco had no such break. They had to travel to Norway and play an excruciatingly physical match against Bodo Glimt. This team is exhausted, and the combination of travel, injuries, and schedule congestion may be too much for Monaco even at home. I could very well see a share of the spoils. I expect Lens to take advantage of their tired opponents and stay top three in the league.
Wow. I wasn't expecting the over/under to be set for 2.5 goals in this match. I thought it would be 3.5, and I still would have given out the over. Rennes matches have been electric all season, with the over 2.5 hitting in five matches straight, and out of those five, over 3.5 hit in three and over 4.5 hit in one. Rennes has a tremendous attack with Esteban Lepaul entering this match off the back of a hattrick. Paris has enjoyed similar style matches, which recently included a 3-3 draw against Lyon. Don't overthink this one - take the over.
Toulouse have scored 2.6 goals per game at home this season. Only PSG and Monaco have scored more goals in front of their home fans than Les Violets. They should have enough firepower to beat Le Havre at Stadium de Toulouse this weekend. Le Havre are in form right now, but they’ve conceded 2 goals per game on the road. That doesn’t bode well for a game against free-scoring Toulouse. It’s also worth noting that Toulouse beat Le Havre home and away last season by an aggregate scoreline of 6-1.
Monaco look capable of extending their unbeaten streak to seven games when they host newly promoted Paris FC at Stade Louis II this weekend. They’re up to second in the Ligue 1 table after beating Toulouse and Nantes in their last two matches. Monaco are very strong at home, with four wins and a draw from five games this season. Paris FC have lost three of their five away games. They’re on a three-game winless streak, and they could struggle at Stade Louis II.
Marseille is the top-scoring team in Ligue 1 with 22 goals in nine games. However, Marseille enters Wednesday’s tilt having lost their last two games across all competitions, so I expect the home side to come out with a purpose against Angers, who have scored just six goals in league play, tied for the fewest in Ligue 1. Look for Marseille to make a statement and cover -1.5.
Lorient is struggling to find consistent form back in Ligue 1, however, their matches have seen a wild amount of goals. Lorient's nine matches have seen a total of 33 goals this season, which is the most in the entirety of the league. Their last three home matches alone have seen 18 matches, and they're showing no signs of correcting. The giants of Paris, PSG could cover this over by themselves with their loaded attack, but expect Lorient to find the scoresheet in the process, even though they'll most likely lose.
Monaco were desperately unlucky in their 0-0 draw with Tottenham in midweek. They battered their opponents, but Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made a string of sensational saves. Monaco’s players will be disappointed by the result, but they should return to winning ways this weekend. They’ve picked up three wins and a draw from four home games this season, and they should have enough quality to beat a distinctly average Toulouse team.
Monaco are one of the most exciting clubs to watch in all of France. they've seen a total of 30 goals over their opening eight Ligue 1 matches. While they have been excited, they haven't been very consistent, and they're already showing significant exhaustion from balancing Ligue 1 and UCL play. They will be playing three matches over a seven day spread. They draw Angers on Oct. 18, having Tottenham on the 22nd, and Toulouse on the 25. I expect Toulouse to take advantage of a tired Monaco side that will be on worse legs, even at home.
Did you really think I'd let Buckets have the Euro soccer Friday to himself? We don't even let that dude near a candle. I'm totally joking, I've never met Jon but I can't think of a more fun guy to have a Guinness with and watch soccer. I ask his opinion occasionally. And the also-excellent Martin Green. We have world-class soccer cappers, best in the biz. Me? Rookie and never bet a French game that didn't involve the World Cup. I just assume they drink wine and eat brie at intermission. I'd like to tell you more but it took me long enough to decipher French on the Ligue 1 site -- something about a Louvre robbery (find that utterly fascinating BTW).
Marseille will be surging with momentum after winning their last four games. Les Olympiens beat the mighty PSG, secured a 2-1 win against title contenders Strasbourg, thumped Ajax 4-0, and beat Metz 3-0 on the road. They’re the top-scoring team in Ligue 1 this season, with a +10 goal difference, and they should be too strong for Le Havre. Marseille have won their last nine games against Le Havre, and they should extend that impressive record on Saturday.
