This was one I watched all week hoping it would get to +7 or maybe even 7.5, but instead it dipped a little and many books are now showing 5.5. Just an awful spot for UDub off playing mega-physical Ohio State and then obviously the travel across country, leaving the West Coast for the first time. In addition, the Huskies are without three starters: star corner Tacario Davis, pass-rusher Zach Durfee and left tackle Carver Willis. I may not be Vince Lombardi when it comes to football knowledge, but I'm pretty sure not having your top QB protector, top QB disruptor and top QB interceptor, so to speak, is less than ideal.
Washington fared poorly in its cross-country travels last season, losing on all four games in the ET zone. Now the Huskies, short-handed and reeling from a beatdown from Ohio State, visit well-rested Maryland, a foe coming off a bye. Standout CB Tacario Davis, OT Carver Willis and DE Zach Durfee appear idled. Though the Terps have eased through a soft schedule, their sacks rate of four per game cannot be dismissed. The unchallenging opponents have allowed frosh QB Malik Washington to get acclimated. He should be ready for his first significant test.
Maryland ranks in the top 10 in the nation in defensive scoring, holding their opponents to a little over 10 points per game. The Huskies were just shut down by Ohio State and while their defense isn’t that good, their defensive front can be disruptive with an above average secondary. If the Huskies want to play up-tempo, that favors Maryland’s style especially playing at home.
Washington got a wake-up call last week with their first loss against Ohio State, but there's no shame in that. The Buckeyes are going to make a lot of teams look bad. What I liked about Washington was their quarterback, Demond Williams stood strong and had a good game, completing 18 of 22 for 81% despite the Buckeyes coming at him. Washington has gone over three games this season, and they average 43.2 points per game. Maryland scores 32 points per game, and this will be their stiffest test of the season. Just the over.
Washington maybe shrunk a bit in the big game spotlight vs Ohio State. What I like about this matchup is the fact that this run game is still stellar, so is this defense and they are facing a freshman - albeit talented - QB in Malik Washington, but still nonetheless, it's his toughest test of the season.
