Duke's offense has struggled without Daniel Jones around hiding a lot of deficiencies. It will struggle against a VaTech defense that's no longer great, but is still solid. The problem is I don't trust the Hokies offense to cover this spread, so instead I'll take the Under.
Virginia Tech has had head-scratching issues to begin the season. As a favorite against Boston College, the offense sputtered for a loss. Then, the Hokies had close calls against Old Dominion and Furman. Look for Duke to give the Hokies another battle as this matchup is historically close. Grab Duke on Friday.
Duke has gone under in 12 of its last 16 ACC games and in nine of their last 12 road games. The majority of those games they had a quarterback named Daniel Jones, now with the New York Giants. Virginia Tech's defense is its strength, ranking 31th in the country by allowing just 4.79 yards per play. Both teams had two weeks to prepare. Advantage defense, all game long.
The mystique of a night game at Lane Stadium has long worn off for opponents who take on the Hokies in Blacksburg. Even so, Virginia Tech should have a sense of urgency and motivation Friday in its ACC home opener. The Hokies have been anemic through their first three games, but Justin Fuente's clubs are historically strong following a bye week. Quarterback Ryan Willis had a breakout game against Duke last season, and the defense slowed down the Devils' spread option attack.
I'm projecting 47 points for Blue Devils-Hokies, giving us strong value on the under. Look for Virginia Tech, which has allowed 17 points in each of its past two games, to control things at home and limit the scoring.
