Georgia will be very tempted to have a go at the Zags and their 86.6 ppg offense (ranks second nationally) after holding its own vs. a brutal SEC slate plus a non-conference win over Rick Pitino's high-flying St. John's in the Bahamas. UGa enters the Dance on a 7-3 over run and scoring nearly 80 pg their last five led by the 1-2 punch of 6-11 frosh Asa Newell (15.3 ppg) and soph G Silas Demary, Jr (20 ppg the last nine). Meanwhile for the Zags, Mark Few finally seemed to arrive at proper rotations and lineup combos, with 6-10 Braden Huff now starting alongside 6-9 Graham Ike, and transfer G Khalif Battle (17.5 ppg last four) hitting stride. Gonzaga has thrown together lots of different lineups through the season as Mark Few tries to push the right buttons for a team that has not quite found that elite gear we’ve come to expect from this program. As a whole the defensive profile wasn’t great for the Zags, and though they showed the ability to flip a switch (like in the conference title game win against Saint Mary’s) it’s going to be tough to limit Georgia’s size advantage inside with 6-11 breakout freshman Asa Newell. The Bulldogs’ ability to get extra shots with offensive rebounds is how they keep this game close against the high offensive ceiling of Gonzaga, and since an upset could be in the cards I love taking the multi-possession spread.

Mike White is 4-0 in NCAA Tournament opening-round games, and he's got a Georgia team that's beaten Florida, St. John's (neutral site) and Kentucky. Sophomore Silas Demary Jr. averaged 19.4 points over the final eight games, giving Georgia a terrific 1-2 punch with freshman sensation and projected lottery pick Asa Newell. Tough-minded and battle-tested from the SEC schedule, the Bulldogs will make things challenging for high-flying Gonzaga and potentially pull the upset.
