British Columbia establishes gambling regulatory body in regulations update
The provincial government of British Columbia has moved to establish an independent gaming regulatory agency to address concerns over criminal activity
If British Columbia ever joins Alberta and Ontario among Canadian provinces that regulate competitive markets for casino apps, one important piece of that regulatory structure will be in place as of April 2026. A new body that is as of yet unnamed will oversee all legal gaming in the province including the play of online casino games for real money at that time.
British Columbia updates gaming regulations
According to The Canadian Press, an update to British Columbia's Gaming Control Act of 2022 creates a new gambling control office in the province. The act will take effect on April 13, 2026, and represent a reduction of responsibilities for the Ministry of Public Safety and the Solicitor General of British Columbia.
A statement from Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Nina Krieger explains that the ministry's Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch "will be transitioning to an independent gambling control office." The "office will have a general manager who makes and enforces regulations in gambling and horse racing."
That office will also be responsible for administering British Columbia's Support BC program. That program supports people who struggle with problem gambling and their loved ones.
The update to the act also reorganizes fee structures for existing gaming in the province. That new structure and the separation of gaming regulatory duties could lend well to future expansion of gaming in British Columbia into casino apps.
Changes could lay groundwork for expansion
The new fee structures laid out in the updated act for gaming facility operators focus on percentages of revenue rather than flat fees, mimicking similar frameworks in Ontario and several US states. In addition, the updated text calls for new classes of fees for suppliers for online gaming.
The updated act does not allude to any possible expansion to online casino games for real money in the province. However, headwinds in Canada have been moving that way generally.

At this time, the updated act aims to provide increased surveillance for fraud and money laundering through gaming in British Columbia. In the future, though, it could serve as the start of something bigger.
