Yes the 49ers are missing a ton of defensive talent, but this line has fallen to the point where there's value on the road favorite. Jimmy Garoppolo leads the NFL in passing efficiency over the past two weeks. And while Atlanta is 5-0 ATS this season, the 49ers are 4-0 ATS in the second game of East Coast swings when they stay East for two straight games.
The lookahead line here was 49ers -6.5, and while San Francisco is dealing with a number of injuries on the defensive side of the ball, I don't think that should be enough to move this line three points. Kyle Shanahan always has his team ready to go on the second leg of these East Coast swings, and I'm confident his offense will be able to put up points on a mediocre Atlanta defense. The Falcons offense is reliant on its rushing attack but they're up against the best rush defense in the league, and DeMeco Ryans is a good enough defensive coordinator to overcome the injuries to his defensive front and slow down Atlanta. With this line now under 4, I think 49ers are the play.
The 49ers have followed a Monday night game at home with consecutive early kickoffs in the Eastern Time Zone. That is some harsh scheduling for anyone, particularly a team that saw its injured reserve list grow to 10 on Saturday with the addition of two players. Nearly all were Week 1 starters, and star DE Nick Bosa is questionable for this game. The Falcons rank third in the league in rushing, which compensates for a weak aerial attack. Oh, and they are the NFL’s lone unbeaten team against the spread.
The 49ers are the better team here, but that’s if we’re talking starters vs. starters. This game is set up to be Falcons starters vs. mostly Niners backups. San Francisco has the NFL’s No. 1 defense, but they’ll be missing Arik Armstead, Javon Kinlaw, Emmanuel Moseley, Jimmie Ward and Aziz Al-Shaair, while Nick Bosa is questionable and won’t be 100% if he plays — that makes five defensive starters out and one hobbled at best. The 49ers haven’t beaten — or even faced — a team that currently has a winning record. The Falcons, who are expected to get Kyle Pitts back, are the only team with a perfect ATS record, and I think that continues. Grab the points.
