The Giants offense ranks 28th in DVOA and 29th in yards per play but their defense has been very respectable at 18th in DVOA and 13th in yards per play allowed. Washington has the biggest difference in its offensive rank to defensive rank in DVOA; the offense is 31st and the defense is fourth. These two played in Week 6, with Washington winning 20-19. In the rematch, the defenses take even more control.
Washington had this game won many times over in their first meeting, but QB Kyle Allen couldn't protect the football. I expect another low-scoring game between these two and the reason why I like the Giants is due to their defense. That has been the biggest improvement I've seen so far. Offensively, they can move the ball and if QB Daniel Jones can stop turning it over, they can start getting more touchdowns. Look for a bevy of field goals in this one with the Giants outkicking Washington
The difference between two teams that are evenly matched (which is a nice way of saying they are bottom-tiered) is comparative recovery time. The Giants played Monday and must travel, albeit a short distance. Washington last suited up two Sundays ago. Kyle Allen might be the best active QB in the NFC East. (Yes, faint praise.) Football Outsiders regards the Washington defense as the fourth-most efficient, 14 slots ahead of the Giants' defense. New York covers regularly on the road but rarely wins straight-up. The small spread makes threading that needle unlikely here.
Both of these teams are much better on defense, where the Giants are just 18th in DVOA but Washington ranks No. 4. On the flip side, both these offenses are in the bottom five of DVOA and the bottom three of points scored per drive. Daniel Jones started hot against an elite Bucs defense but eventually settled into mediocrity before his last drive to almost tie it, and I think we'll see more mediocrity in this matchup. And while Washington scored 25 in its last game by running the ball down Dallas' throat, they'd scored 20 or less in five straight before that. The last meeting between these two paced Under the whole way despite a late fumble return TD. Expect the same here.
This is a short week for the Giants, who won't be able to handle Washington's great defensive line. New York's defense is pretty good but Daniel Jones keeps putting them in trouble with his turnovers. He makes two big mistakes per game.
The Giants were impressive Monday night, but took a deflating loss. Now they face a quick turnaround against a Washington team that comes off its bye. Washington is looking to avenge a 20-19 loss to the Giants and keep control of its destiny in the NFC East. In the earlier matchup, Washington actually outplayed the Giants. Lay the field goal.
