The Padres are still in a do-or-die scenario facing off against southpaw Robert Gasser, who makes his first postseason appearance. San Diego has now scored four or more runs in 11 straight at home, and they go with a righty heavy order, which makes a difference in my opinion. The price on the over has moved back slightly after the lineup confirmation, but we get seven righties, the side of the split that hit .257 with 13 homers in 74 innings vs. Gasser this year. He also produced a 1.31 WHIP, considerably higher than against lefties, who hit just .163 against him.
San Diego has carried its home regular-season dominance to the playoffs and will have Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller available tonight. Winning Game 3 without them was just huge. Even ace Michael King, who threw two shutout innings last night, is available for an inning. I'd sure like to see a winner-take-all back in Beer Town against the Miz. Your best bet here might be Padres +1 at -155 (DK) -- all three games have been decided by one run.
It's going to be 80° at Petco Park with the wind blowing in from left field at 7 mph. No chance of rain in San Diego tonight. The wind alone tells me that it's going to be a low-scoring game and likely another one-run game. I'm willing to bet San Diego wins Game 4, backed by the home crowd and the fact that the Brewers are having trouble in away playoff games. They’ve lost 12 straight road games in the playoffs. I give the Brewers the edge with left-hander Robert Gasser getting the start, but we’ll only have to see him for six innings. The later innings is where the Padres do their damage.
I picked the Padres to win this series at the outset and I'll stick with it, despite the 0-2 hole. Truthfully, Milwaukee very well could've been down 2-1 in this series if the ultra-reliable Mason Miller took care of business on Sunday being one strike away from victory. But the reason I like San Diego tonight is Milwaukee's recent postseason struggles away from home. The Brewers are 0-12 in their last 12 postseason games away from American Family Field (formerly Miller Park). The Padres have all the momentum after last night's exciting win in front of a juiced up crowd and should have a full bullpen tonight with Miller and Adrian Morejon available. I think this gets to a Game 5 on Friday night.
Walker Buehler allowed just one run over six innings vs. the Brewers earlier this season, but posted a 4.43 ERA in five September starts and has given up at least one HR in seven straight games. He’ll likely be asked to go about three innings, but there’s likely no Mason Miller again and no Michael King out of the Padres bullpen. The Brewers’ setup looks better: Starting Chad Patrick, who didn’t allow a run in eight September spots until the final one, then Robert Gasser, who posted a 1.67 ERA in five Sept. starts. The Brewers’ back end is fresh and ready for innings 7-8-9.
Walker Buehler is back from the Paternity List and will start as the Padres try to avoid elimination again. I will be furious if I lose this because I can also play Under 9.5 -- nine outs is clearly the sweet spot as Buehler you figure gets one time through the order and if going well should finish three and maybe even start the fourth. Buehler (Buehler?) went at least 3.2 innings in every outing this year but one. He pitched six strong in his lone start vs. Milwaukee. In an ideal world, Buehler for three innings, two TBA pitchers for two and then Adrian Morejon for two and Mason Miller for two each -- they reportedly will be available after not in Game 3.
