By many metrics, Angels rookie pitcher Walbert Urena (7-8, 2.83 ERA), which sounds like something you contract drinking mosquito-infested water in the Sudan, is having a better year than Rangers ace and two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom (8-7, 3.87 ERA) as they meet tonight. And deGrom has been hit around by the Halos at 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA and .324 OBA in two starts this year. I was going to stop today if both early games hit, but only one did -- albeit my bigger wager, thankfully, on Detroit -- so here we are to determine if the MLB day/night is solid up or slightly down. Great price at +1.5 in what should be a low-scoring affair. Texas is six under .500 away.
Walbert Urena was pitching in front of his MLB idol (Sandy Alcantara) last time out and just could not get anything going for himself. Now he's back home against a team that knocked him out in just four innings last time because of a high walk total despite just one hit. If he can keep the walks in check tonight, he should be able to once again get into that 6th inning. I'm drawing a line through the last start where he lasted less than two innings, and taking a shot that he comes back strong here after a reduced pitch count in the last start.
FanDuel. Walbert Urena has been a pleasant surprise for the pitching-starved Angels. The righty has pitched to a 2.83 ERA (3.39 xERA), with 97 strikeouts in 101.2 innings. He’s been especially good at home, with a 2.49 ERA (3.01 FIP) and a 25% K%, while clearing this line in 9/10 starts with at least 70 pitches. With no limitations going forward, I love this spot for Urena. The Rangers have really struggled of late, with a 24.5% K% against righties in the 2nd half, while only mustering a .688 OPS. Five Rangers in today’s projected lineup have a strikeout rate of 25% or worse against righties over the last 20 games, with seven being worse than league average.
