Indiana’s defense is the much better unit team this year as compared to their offense. The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to 14 points per game at home and Minnesota is just south of 295 yards of total offense per game this season. Neither teams play with pace, Josh Hoover has struggled offensively the past three games, and the Gophers have had a tough time converting on third down all season, except more of that to come against one of the best defenses in the country.
This could be a classic Big10 battle of field position with two good defenses. Neither team plays with a lot of pace as Iowa should look to establish the run and control the clock at some. A lot of field goals incoming.
This total is wild but it’s high for a reason. North Texas has the second best offense in the country, averaging over 43 points per game. The Owls defense hasn’t been able to stop anyone as their allowing 34 points per game. The pace and big plays will be there as this game could end up being like playing a video game.
North Texas has one of the best offenses in the country, scoring 38 points per game. Their defense is shaky at best and could have their hands full against the Midshipmen’s rushing attack averaging over 250 yards per game as they’ll contribute with their ground game. Navy’s secondary is vulnerable as the Mean Green should be able to attack them through the air all game.
South Carolina has put up 34 points then 38 in their last two games but that was against two bottom defenses in the SEC. The Vols have the best scoring defense in the conference and one of the best overall defenses in the country, holding their opponents to under 300 yards per game on average. Tennessee will look to control the clock with their rushing attack, limiting the big plays from the Gamecocks. The last five times these two met, it’s gone over the total but this Tennessee defense is for real.
James Madison continues to roll. The Dukes are averaging 48 points per game, six yards per carry and eight yards per pass. The Mountaineers starting quarterback is listed as questionable but their offense has put up 26 points, or more, in five of their first six. App State might have a tough time slowing down a Dukes offense that’s averaging over 500 yards per game over the last three.
Missouri has gotten to this point from the play of their defense. The Rebels will attempt to take advantage of a vulnerable Missouri secondary but the Tigers have proven that they’re an excellent redzone unit as well. The Rebels defense is better than what the numbers present but Missouri has a balanced offensive attack that can keep this within a field goal.
Pittsburgh’s offense isn’t the same with Holden Geriner behind center. The only bright spot for the Eagles this season has been their defense and Pitt shouldn’t have issue shutting down their offense as well. Boston College leans heavily on their run game but shouldn’t expect much against the Panthers defensive line. Combine all that with heavy winds, under or nothing.
Ohio State is playing with revenge from last year’s Big-10 title game. The big question is if their offensive line is going to protect Julian Sayin. The Buckeyes will be without their best offensive lineman again, Austin Siereveld, as they’ve struggled to establish the run and Indiana will dial up the pressure. The Hoosiers secondary has been vulnerable which is where the Buckeyes will look to exploit, obviously. But the better coach, Curt Cignetti, as a home underdog? He’ll show everyone why they’re the reigning National Champions or at least cover.
James Madison has never lost to the Panthers. Despite losing to them last season, Georgia State was the only conference team to keep it within one score against the Dukes. James Madison might have been looking ahead last weekend at Georgia Southern as they’ve struggled on third-down, only winning by three. The Panthers have taken advantage of weak schedule but their offense is good enough to go toe-to-toe with James Madison, like they did last year.
West Virginia’s defense is atrocious. The Mountaineers defense has made middle of pack offenses look elite which takes away from how good their offense has been. West Virginia secondary allows big play after big play and the Bearcats struggle to stop the run which Michael Hawkins Jr. and Cam Cook should take advantage of. The Bearcats passing attack has been inconsistent at times but should be just fine against this defense. Both teams play with tempo and average over 30 points per game, so if it ain’t broke...
FIU, technically, has the sixth-best defense in the entire country and the ninth-bets scoring defense holding their opponents to 14.5 points per game. The Gamecocks are holding their opponents to 20 points per game at home and FIU's offense had struggled on the road, scoring only a combined 19 points through two roads. This is a low total for a reason since the Gamecocks only average 64 plays per game and will look to control the clock.
As a Penn State alum, there’s no way they should be favorites in this game. Their offense has shown nothing in the last two games but it’s the White Out effect. The Nittany Lions have one six of the last seven White Outs and despite the public still all over USC and line flipped in their favor. The Trojans travel cross country and Penn State's defensive coordinator was Lincoln Riley’s DC the last two seasons. The Trojans love to attack from the air, since their run game is sub-par, and that's one defensive strength Penn State has currently. A buy very low spot on the Nittany Lions.
Weather most certainly could be a factor tonight. Georgia really hasn’t played anyone and you can make the same case for the Bama. With the impending weather looming, this will come down to the defenses, as both offenses have proved they can score in bunches. The Crimson Tide has the better rushing attack and Keelon Russell is the better mobile quarterback to handle Georgia’s defensive pressure.
The Hokies travel cross country after a heartbreaking loss to Pitt. Cal’s offense hasn’t been great but are we really going to trust a James Franklin led team to cover this many points on the road when they already had some close calls to lesser opponents?
