Wizard of Odds
Kenny White learned the bookmaking business on his father's knee. By age 24 he was running a sportsbook and at 26 he was setting lines for Vegas' biggest casinos. A two-time winner of the prestigious Stardust Football Invitational, the originator of Player Power Ratings and the former head of the powerful Las Vegas Sports Consultants, Kenny arrived to Sportsline armed with new algorithms, ready to exploit mistakes in the betting line. He debuted with SportsLine in February 2017 and promptly went 51-33-2 (61 percent) on college hoops. He's destroying the books again in 2018. Last year, In just their second season in the Horizon League, the Norse won the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed. This year, Northern Kentucky has held the top spot in the conference all season; however, it leads Friday's opponent, Wright State, by just one game. The Norse seek revenge for a 84-81 Jan. 11 home loss to Wright State -- a surprising decision to a team that doesn't run or score more than one point per possession. Northern Kentucky is 6-0 SU and 4-2 ATS in conference road games. Take the highly motivated Norse to even the season series.
Rhode Island has a four-game lead over Davidson and St. Bonaventure. At this point in the dog days of February, teams with nothing to play for start to compete at the level of the competition. The competition tonight happens to be a solid club that would love to play in the NCAA Tournament. St. Bonaventure is my 61st rated team and would get a big boost by beating Rhode Island. The Bonnies lost both games last year, including one in the conference tournament and earlier this year in Kingston. St. Bonaventure point guard Jaylen Adams takes control at home. Rhode Island guard EC Matthews, worth 2.5 points, might not be 100 percent.
Elon has home revenge against North Carolina-Wilmington.This is a big game for both teams as the winner will have a leg up toward finishing 6th in the conference and getting a bye for the conference tournament. I have Elon's offense rated slightly higher than UNCW and I have their defense rated a couple of points higher. I'll take the better team with the better defense plus the points, playing with revenge.
It is hard to find a reason to bet against Villanova at this point, but the one big one is that today will be the first road game without Phil Booth and Eric Paschall. Villanova lost to Saint John's because of the production lost without Booth and Paschall in the lineup. Now the Wildcats must try to win on the road after an exhausting victory against Butler on Saturday. Providence is on the bubble, but I feel it has the talent to stay close and maybe just maybe pull off a major upset.
The coaching and talent level is similar for these squads, but Nevada's strength is on the offensive end of the floor, while Boise State defends at an extremely high level. Nevada has struggled against the spread as of late, going 3-8 in their last 11 and 4-8 in conference with a 4-5-1 away ATS record. Boise State is 7-5 ATS at home and 7-6 in conference. Boise State also has the best player on the court in Chandler Hutchinson. I like Boise State by six!
