Let's sneak this one in. Why even getting the + with Sunderland at home? Not sure. It's the first Tyne-Wear derby in nearly a decade. I had no clue what that meant until I looked it up. The Black Cats sit higher in the table. Reinildo returns to the Sunderland lineup after missing last weekend’s defeat at Manchester City.
Tyneside will be rocking as the local Sunderland-Newcastle derby revives at the Stadium of Light. It sticks in the craw of all Magpie backers that the Black Cats are actually ahead of Newcastle in the table, as Regis Le Bris has stewarded a stunning display for a promoted side that has stayed in the mix for a European spot. Sunderland likely has some staying power thanks to offseason reinforcements that include Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, who can still effectively run a show, especially at home, where the Black Cats are unbeaten in seven. Meanwhile, road form has mostly been an issue for Eddie Howe's bunch, though Newcastle does have a recent win at Everton (its first on the EPL trail). Play Sunderland on Spread
Local rivals Sunderland and Newcastle will clash for the first time in 10 years this weekend. Sunderland spent a decade languishing in the lower leagues, but the Black Cats are now back with a vengeance. They're ninth in the EPL table, a point clear of Newcastle, and they'll be fired-up for this game. Sunderland have scored 2 goals per game at home this season, but they also concede a goal per game. Newcastle's last 7 games saw over 2.5 goals, so that looks like a great bet.
The instant reminder that this is a Derby, so you have to throw logic out the door just a smidge. To my NCAAF fans, think of this like a smaller version of Ohio State versus Michigan. This is a rivalry match, that tends to carry aa bit more aggression and is a bit more prone to upsets, so I'm just going half unit here. That being said - Newcastle matches for a while now have been freaking awesome for goals. Their last seven matches across all competitions have seen both BTTS and over 2.5 goals hit. They'll be tired, but out for blood against a big rival. Expect goals here, and potentially a cheeky red card or penalty.
