Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Michigan, Florida State...all losses for Kalen DeBoer's Bama away from Tuscaloosa since last season. Romps past outmanned ULM and a disappointing Wisconsin since the opener are not yet a buy signal for Bama, and let's see how Ty Simpson fares in his second chance vs. a real defense. Meanwhile, Gunner Stockton showed that he has some Stetson Bennett in him with that fightback win for Georgia at Tennessee, as the gutsy Stockton is rallying his troops much like Diego Pavia at Vandy, and has big-time weapons at his disposal. Oh yes, Kirby Smart also hasn't lost at home since the pre-Covid days of 2019 when Will Muschamp's South Carolina turned the trick...33 straight wins 'tween the hedges have followed! Play Georgia
The Bulldogs overcame quite a bit of adversity to notch their road win against Tennessee, and we expect that performance to galvanize this club moving forward. The Crimson Tide have recovered from their disastrous Week 1 loss to Florida State but there is still a widespread belief that coach Kalen DeBoer might not have the full respect of his players. This is bad news for this proud program and, regardless, we like the Bulldogs to avenge last year's agonizing loss when their epic comeback fell just short against the Tide.
Georgia is 3-0 on the year, and they haven't covered a spread, but they won at Tennessee, 44-41, and had a week off to prepare for Alabama. The Crimson Tide has won and covered their last two games, but it's almost as if they still have to pay for losing at Florida State in the opener as 13.5-point favorites. Alabama has been exposed without Nick Saban, and the team is in search of its identity now. Win at Georgia, some of that goes away. Georgia wants to help kick dirt on a down Alabama squad. Gunner Stockton has done a good job quarterbacking in his first full year as the starter for Georgia. I got Georgia at home to cover.
I realize that Alabama has had Georgia's number over much of the last two decades, winning nine of the last 10 meetings. But all but the last one came with Nick Saban coaching the Crimson Tide. In seven road or neutral-site games so far under coach Kalen DeBoer, Alabama is just 2-5, with four of those losses coming against unranked teams. Meanwhile Georgia hasn't lost a night game between the hedges since 2009. I loved the Bulldogs' 44-41 victory at No. 15 Tennessee two weeks ago, which is far more impressive than anything the Tide has done this season. I trust Georgia coach Kirby Smart addressed the issues with the secondary during the bye week. Give me two units on the Dawgs.
