There’s no question that Pittsburgh is the more talented team in this one. However, the Backyard Brawl has seen some tight games of late. The Mountaineers have covered four of the last six games while five of the last seven meetings have been decided by a touchdown or less. Even though West Virginia will be without Jahiem White, the Panthers defense showed its vulnerability against Central Michigan and this game will mean a little bit more for Rich Rod in his return to Morgantown.
WVU lost its best offensive player in preseason All-Big 12 running back Jahiem White as well as starting WR Jaden Bray to season-ending injuries in last week's embarrassing loss at Ohio -- although the Bobcats might be the MAC's best team and nearly beat Rutgers in Week 1. So that's why this spread has risen all week. But now that the hook has appeared, I have to take it in the Backyard Brawl. I expect a rock fight as records often don't matter in the rivalry. Pitt has been dominant so far but has played a very weak slate and leaves home for the first time. I drove from Pittsburgh to Morgantown once. Interesting to say the least. Think the movie "The Descent."
With RB Jahiem White and WR Jaden Bray done for the season from injuries, West Virginia must lean on its defense to stay competitive. Good luck with that. Pitt rang up 61 points in its opener against an FCS foe, then blitzed Central Michigan for 45 a week ago. The Mountaineers did hold down Ohio in a 17-10 upset loss last week but was heavily outgained. The Panthers likely will not display sympathy against their short-handed opponent in this rivalry matchup.
