UCLA sure made Utah look like national title contenders last week. I'm afraid the Bruins are in for another long season under coach DeShaun Foster. Meanwhile the Rebels looked improved in their second game under coach Dan Mullen. They also have shown an ability to score points, which isn't something I can say about the Bruins yet. UNLV pulls off the slight upset.
UCLA will have a much better performance against UNLV than it had against Utah, because the Utes might have one of the best defenses in the Big 12 and UNLV has given up 21+ points in each its two wins. For the record, those wins came against the No. 153 (Sam Houston) and No. 194 (FCS Idaho State) ranked teams in all of Division 1, per Sagarin. UNLV's offense seems to be solidifying its identity behind Anthony Colandrea, and since the game looks like a competitive back-and-forth affair the game script points to plenty of scoring.
UCLA got shut down vs. Utah last week with only 220 yards of offense, and that's not going to cut it in many places in college football. But UNLV played two lower-level colleges, and their defense couldn't stop them. They were running and throwing on the Rebels, averaging 443 yards. Utah scored 43 points against UCLA, and I think UNLV can do a similar job, but I think UCLA will score much more than 10 with QB Nico Iamaleava having a much better showing. I like the over, which has come down from 57 for some reason.
