The Crimson Tide's issues have been well documented: a struggling offensive line, spotty quarterback play and receivers who can't separate. Quarterback Jalen Milroe, who has been reinstated as the starter, gives Alabama a running dimension at quarterback but struggled with reading defenses against Texas. Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding, who spent the last five seasons as DC in Tuscaloosa, knows Alabama's offensive personnel top-to-bottom and will have a special gameplan to stop his former team. Meanwhile, the Rebels offense has been potent this season, averaging 52.7 points per game. I wouldn't be surprised to see an Ole Miss win, but I'll take the points.
Alabama is out of the top-10 rankings for the first time since 2015 and, coincidentally, that came after a loss to Ole Miss. Following a loss to Texas and a flat performance against South Florida, coach Nick Sabana was predictably defiant and assured in his comments this week. In other words, expect the best possible performance Saturday that this Alabama team is capable of. Maybe it won’t result in a cover, but an inspired Saban-coach team is historically a solid bet.
The only thing more frustrating than Alabama's current offense was my pick and writeup of the Crimson Tide last week. Woof. That said, you have to recognize it, own it and use your strengths to overcome the weaknesses and that's exactly what Nick Saban should do here. Defense. Keep Ole Miss out of the end zone by any means necessary and slug fest this thing. Give me the under.
The wrong team is favored here. Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding spent the previous five seasons in the same role at Alabama, and he knows all about the Crimson Tide’s weaknesses. Whether it’s the offensive line, quarterback Jalen Milroe or coach Nick Saban, nothing the Tide will do will shock Golding. This one will go over the total, and the Rebels will run away late in the fourth.
