The Mountaineers are a deserving top-10 team, so while the Cyclones do offer a tough environment, they are still getting respected as if they are the 2017 upset-minded versions of themselves. West Virginia is clearly the better team, and with Will Grier at the helm of the offense, I trust it to pour points on throughout the game, particularly late if needed. I'm getting great value here at the lowest point this line has been all week, so I'm hopping on the favorites and riding this to a win.
This is an overreaction on both sides with Grier struggling and throwing a few interceptions last week and Iowa State winning a shootout over Oklahoma State. My model makes WVU -11.5 at a neutral site and -8 on the road at Jack Trice Stadium.
The Mountaineers are ranked No. 6 which will be on the Iowa State radar, however the Cyclones are a shell of last year's team. The Iowa State offense got a kickstart from true freshman QB Brock Purdy last week as the dual-threat QB ran for 84 and passed for 318 versus Oklahoma State, the Cowboys' bad game in three weeks. Iowa State has no running game so the Mountaineers will spy on Purdy and force him to pass. Last week Will Grier threw three interceptions at the goal line and they still won 38-22 but did not cover. It very easily could've been 59-15. Heisman hopeful Greir will be more focus this week.
Every test this season West Virginia has passed with flying colors. It blew out Tennessee and Kansas State as well as had a nice resume road win against Texas Tech. For Iowa State the unknown at quarterback may help give it the edge needed at home. Third string quarterback Brock Purdy sparked a win against Oklahoma State and has the intangibles to give West Virginia a true test. Grab the home dog Cyclones.
The Brock Purdy hype came out of nowhere last weekend for Iowa State, but this game vs. West Virginia is a totally different animal. If it's Purdy or Kyle Kempt, the Mountaineers defense thrives on bringing pressure from a variety of different places. In a shootout like this, both quarterbacks have to be elite. There's only one who's proven it on a consistent basis -- and that's West Virginia's Will Grier.
