The Detroit Tigers slump is hard to pinpoint, but to break out of it they are going to need one of their team leaders in Riley Greene to assist. Greene had a couple of hits in yesterday’s loss to the Blue Jays, and even during their losing stretch has hit three home runs. Today will mark double digit at bats against veteran Jose Berrios. Look for Greene to use that experience to his advantage, and clear his total bases.
A few weeks ago no one would have imagined there would be a buy low spot on the Detroit Tigers. Today the market offers that as they are just 1-10 over their last eleven games. They appeared to be in control in yesterday’s opener before the Blue Jays scored eleven runs from the sixth inning on. Back the Tigers who already have a win this year with Jose Berrios on the mound.
The first-place Tigers have lost 10 of their last 11 games, including their last four, and since the All-Star break, they've gone 1-6, scoring just 13 runs. Meanwhile, the first-place Blue Jays have won 17 of their last 21 games, but they’re one game below .500 on the road. They're playing the second of four games in this series at Detroit, winning yesterday in a blowout. The Blue Jays bring out Jose Berrios, who won his last start despite giving up four runs. Detroit comes with Keider Montero, who has gone under in his last four starts but got a rare loss in his last game, allowing four runs in 4.1 innings. Both teams are going in different directions. I'm on the Blue Jays.
Despite the Tigers being 32-19 at home, they lost last night 11-4 and allowed Toronto to rack up 15 hits. The Tigers are 1-9 in their last ten while the Jays are 7-3 and continue to roll, now tied for MLB's most wins at 61. Keider Montero has found mild success as a starter and reliever this year but he's also allowed seven runs across his last two appearances and this Toronto lineup is scorching hot. Jose Berrios has hit a few speed bumps in July, allowing four or more runs in 3/4 starts but he's weirdly been better away from home. This is simply two teams going in opposite directions, so I won't overthink it, especially at this price.
After the bloodbath last night, and looking at the pitching matchup between Jose Berrios and Keider Montero, this number really jumps out to me. It's nearly even money when the Blue Jays right now are head-and-shoulders better than the Tigers, who have lost 10 of 11. That includes getting swept by the lowly Pirates. The Tigers are broken until they show us otherwise. The Blue Jays are soaring. Let's ride this.
July hasn't been super for Jays starter Jose Berrios, with a 7.11 ERA this month. Still, the same Berrios posted a 1.97 ERA in June, and most importantly, Toronto has won in 8 of his last 10 starts. The Jays have also done the win thing 17 times in their last 21 outings...and the Tigers can only wish as much. It's now losses in 10 of 11 after Toronto's 11-4 romp on Thursday, as the wheels seem to have come off, with Detroit outscored 77-30 across that span (as the Jays leapfrogged them for the AL's best record). Keider Montero (with his 5.40 ERA in three July starts) doesn't seem the guy to reverse the trend. Play Blue Jays on Money Line
