Thursday World Cup trading preview
- Spain-Austria fewer than 2.5 goals ($0.42)
- Portugal to win vs. Croatia ($0.57)
- Switzerland to win vs. Algeria ($0.49)
Spain recovered from their shocking 0-0 draw in the opening group stage game with wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, securing their spot in the knockout round. They are expected to breeze past Austria, but this is a side that is coming off its own massive result with a late goal against Algeria. Austria allowed just four goals during World Cup qualifying and they could hold the fort down against a Spain team that scored just one goal outside of the Saudi Arabia match.
SportsLine expert Martin Green is taking Portugal to defeat Croatia, believing Cristiano Ronaldo's side have too much talent for the 2018 runners-up. "[Croatia are] a decent team, but they tend to struggle against elite opposition these days, and they could be outclassed by the likes of Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, and Bernardo Silva in midfield," he says. Croatia did make the semifinals in 2022 but have struggled as their key players have aged over the years.
Green also believes Switzerland will take down Algeria, as do SportsLine experts Matt Severance and Brandt Sutton. Severance notes "Algeria has never won a knockout round match", while Sutton says "Switzerland got off to a slow start with a 1-1 draw against Qatar, but since then, the Swiss have been clinical, beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 and then Canada 2-1." Algeria appeared to get a boost after potentially getting a win late against Austria in the group stage finale but the European side scored moments later to get a draw and save their World Cup campaign. Trade on Thursday's World Cup 2026 knockout matches with the Polymarket promo code SPORTSLINE:
