Missouri sports betting timeline

Missouri voters narrowly passed Amendment 2, which legalizes online and retail sports betting in the state, last November and state officials certified the results a month later. The following is a brief timeline regarding the legalization of sports betting in Missouri:

  • 2018: A House bill allowing the state's riverboat casinos and daily fantasy sports operators to offer legal sports betting was introduced. The U.S. Supreme Court repealed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, allowing states to offer legal sports betting
  • 2022: Betting bills are approved in the House and moved to the Senate, but are stalled.
  • 2023: Numerous bills are introduced but fail to pass
  • 2024: More bills are introduced, a number of sportsbooks make monetary contributions toward the campaign to legalize sports betting, several professional sports teams appeal to voters for approval, which occurs in November and is certified a month later
  • 2025: Multiple sportsbooks pursue Missouri sports betting licenses; MGC announced launch of sports betting on Dec. 1. Temporary sports wagering licenses issued on October 22, and patrons can establish online wagering accounts and make deposits beginning at 12 a.m. on November 17.

Up to 14 sportsbooks can operate once sports betting in Missouri officially goes live on Dec. 1. Two untethered licenses have already been awarded to Circa and DraftKings in Missouri, meaning those operators do not require an in-state partner.

Can you bet on the Chiefs' odds in Missouri?

No, you cannot bet online on NFL odds for the Kansas City Chiefs. Unless you travel to a nearby state that has already legalized sports betting, you cannot bet on Chiefs odds on sportsbook apps until legal sports betting launches in Missouri in December.

When will online sports betting in Missouri open?

Sports betting apps in Missouri are set to officially go live on Dec. 1, 2025. The Missouri Gaming Commission originally attempted to expedite the launch of sports betting by submitting emergency rules, but they were rejected by the Missouri Secretary of State. As a result, the MGC adhered to the constitutional deadline of Dec. 1 set by Amendment 2.

Who regulates Missouri sports betting?

The Missouri Gaming Commission, which was established in 1993 to regulate excursion gambling boats, is in charge of licensing and regulating sports betting in the state. It licenses operators and enforces compliance with state rules. The MGC is overseen by five commissioners appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate, and it is operated daily by an appointed executive director. In addition, the Secretary of State reviews and approves the Commission's rules and regulations.

How to contact the Missouri Gaming Commission

The Missouri Gaming Commission can be reached through the following methods:

Where does Missouri sports betting tax revenue go?

The tax rate for legal sports betting in Missouri is 10% of sports betting revenue. First, the revenue from the tax is used to cover the Missouri Gaming Commission's regulatory costs. At least $5 million or 10% of the remaining revenue, whichever is greater, then goes to the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund. Whatever funds exist after that go toward K-12 and higher education in the state.

Responsible gambling in Missouri

There are several resources available in Missouri and nationwide for individuals with compulsive gambling problems.

Sportsbooks also offer responsible gambling resources, such as tips, advice and guides, but not all operators are the same, so customer support should be contacted in order to receive more information.
