Best bets for Sunday, August 24
The Padres have won five in a row to take a one-game lead in the NL West heading into Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers, who have played .500 baseball over their last 10 games. Los Angeles is hoping for a strong performance out of Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-8, 2.90 ERA), who gave up three runs in seven innings in his last start. San Diego counters with Nick Pivetta (13-4, 2.81 ERA), who has won three of his last four starts. Pivetta fanned 10 hitters in six innings in his last outing against the Giants, a 5-1 win for San Diego. The SportsLine Projection Model rates Padres +1.5 as a "B" grade play Sunday, with San Diego covering in 71% of simulations.
New York is facing a four-game sweep when it sends Carlos Rodon (13-7, 3.24 ERA) to the bump on Sunday evening against the Red Sox. Rodon has won his last two starts, most recently giving up just two runs in six innings in a 13-3 win over Tampa Bay. Boston will roll with Dustin May (7-9, 4.59 ERA), who has lost two of his three starts since being acquired at the trade deadline. He most recently got tagged for two runs on eight hits in six innings in a 6-3 loss to Baltimore. The Yankees are -170 favorites on the money line (wager $170 to win $100) and the model is leaning that way, with New York winning in 62% of simulations to bring value at these odds.
