Best bets for Wednesday, August 27

The Mariners and Padres meet for the final time this year, and the winner of Wednesday's clash will win this series. Seattle has the season-long edge 4-1, but San Diego tied this series up 1-1 with a 7-6 win thanks to a five-run first inning, headlined by a Ramon Laureano grand slam. Veteran right-hander Yu Darvish (3-3, 5.36 ERA) starts for the Padres, while Bryan Woo (11-7, 2.94 ERA) gets the nod for the Mariners. It took a bit, but it appears Darvish has returned to form, spinning three quality starts over his last five turns, including six innings of one-run ball against the Dodgers his last time out. As for Woo, he's pitched at least six innings in every single one of his 25 starts this year, and he allowed just one run over seven innings against the A's in his last start. The SportsLine Projection Model, which simulates every MLB game 10,000 times, is backing the Mariners at home, as Seattle wins in 57% of simulations.

The Mets appear to have stopped their freefall after playing some rough baseball coming out of the All-Star Break, and they have a chance to secure a three-game sweep over the NL East-leading Phillies on Wednesday after winning 13-3 on Monday and 6-5 on Tuesday. Taijuan Walker (4-6, 3.44 ERA) starts for Philly, while New York hands the ball to rookie Nolan McLean (2-0, 1.46 ERA). Walker started the year in the bullpen as a swingmanfor the Phillies, but he's now a full-fledged member of the rotation. He's extra important to the team now with Zack Wheeler out for the year. Walker has pitched a quality start in three of his last four starts. McLean, New York's top pitching prospect, is making his third career start, and things have gone well for the young right-hander so far, having pitched 12.1 innings and allowed two total runs while picking up 15 strikeouts. The model likes Over 8.5 in this one, with that side of the total hitting in 66.3% of simulations, good for a 'B' grade.

There are just two WNBA games on Wednesday, with the Aces visiting the Dream and the Wings hosting the Sun. The Vegas-Atlanta matchup is a big one for playoff purposes, and WNBA expert Max Meyer has logged a pick for this game, targeting Vegas' NaLyssa Smith's rebounds prop line of 4.5 against Atlanta.
