NFL Week 9 Jets vs. Dolphins: First scoreless tie since 1943 possible?

The New York Jets and Miami Dolphins meet Sunday in a matchup of easily the NFL's two worst offenses. Anyone for scoreless tie?

There hasn't been a scoreless tie in the NFL in nearly 80 years. It's very unlikely it will happen Sunday, but one never knows as the league's two worst offenses are squaring off in south Florida with the New York Jets visiting the Miami Dolphins. Kickoff from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami is 1 p.m. ET on CBS with the Jets as 3-point favorites on the NFL odds and an over-under total of 41.5.

Believe it or not, that's not even close to the lowest total of Week 10. That belongs to Redskins at Bills with a total of 37. The winless Dolphins are last in the NFL in scoring at 11.0 points per game and the one-win Jets are 31st at 11.1. New York is last in yards per game at 209.6 and Miami is 31st at 254.6.

If you are wondering, there has never been a scoreless tie in the NFL since the league instituted overtime. The last one happened on Nov. 7, 1943, at Briggs Stadium in Detroit with the Lions and New York Giants finishing 0-0.

That the Jets are favored is very rare in one regard. Since 2000, New York is just the fifth team to be an away favorite as a one-win team from Week 8 or later in the season. It actually happened last year when the 49ers were slight favorites at Arizona, with the Cardinals winning. Overall, the one-win favorites are 2-2 ATS in this scenario.

This result certainly could have an effect on which team lands the No. 1 overall NFL pick in the 2020 draft, although the Dolphins host the currently winless Cincinnati Bengals in Week 16. On the FanDuel NFL futures odds, Miami is +220 to finish 0-16 and -300 to win at least one game.

Miami coach Brian Flores will stick with veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick despite FitzMagic throwing two more interceptions in Monday's 27-14 loss in Pittsburgh – the Fins actually led 14-0 after one quarter. Meanwhile, Jets second-year QB Sam Darnold is in a major funk with seven interceptions combined in the past two games.

Neither team likes 1 p.m. ET kickoffs as the Jets are 2-10 against the spread in their past 12 in them and Miami has lost its past nine 1 p.m. games, covering only two.
