The Cowboys deserved the grief they got for their performance last week, but it was more a result of compounded mistakes than anything else. Dallas was in it all the way in a tough road spot, and its defensive line should have a better opportunity to make an impact this week against a Falcons team that may have a ton of weapons but lacks the creativity of the Rams. This is a big get-right game in a home spot for the Cowboys, which cannot afford to start 0-2. I do have some worries about Dallas’ offensive line injuries and Dan Quinn’s proclivity for attacking on defense. With the line falling to a field goal, it’s a good spot to hop on Dak Prescott & Co. at home.
The Cowboys have gone Over the total in 11 of their last 16 home games. They also come off a tough loss with the Rams defense limiting them to 17 points while the new coach made some aggressive calls that didn’t go well. Meanwhile the Falcons come off a game in which Matt Ryan threw for 450 yards, three of his receivers had 100-yard games and the Atlanta defense let Seattle score 38 points. Both offenses should have fun. Over is the play.
No game that doesn’t involve Patrick Mahomes warrants a total this high. Consider that the Falcons scored just 12 points in the first three quarters against Seattle, while Dallas wound up with 17 in a 37-point encounter with the Rams. The Cowboys likely will increase RB Ezekiel Elliott’s carries from 22 in the opener. QB Matt Ryan lacks mobility, so blitzes can keep Atlanta’s offense in check.
The Cowboys played a really good game in their loss to the Los Angeles Rams last week. Their defensive line was neutralized by terrific offensive playcalling by Rams coach Sean McVay. I don't foresee that being the case with Atlanta, which had problems containing Seattle's defensive front seven. Look for Dallas' defensive line to right the ship against QB Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense.
The Falcons are loaded on offense. Matt Ryan hit three different receivers for more than 100 yards each. Don't overreact to Atlanta's Week 1 result versus Russell Wilson: This team is closer to the version that finished 6-2 last season than the version that started 1-7. The Cowboys are dealing with several key injuries, and their coaching continues to be subpar. Grab the points.
