Orioles vs. Yankees Monday MLB probable pitchers, odds, props: Domingo German set at 5.5 hits allowed in first start following perfect game
New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German didn't just pitch the first complete game of his big-league career last time on the mound -- he threw the 24th perfect game in MLB history and fourth in Yankees history, the most of any club. What should Yankees fans expect for an encore as German returns to the mound Monday night at home vs. Baltimore? He's set over/under 5.5 hits and 2.5 earned runs allowed via Caesars Sportsbook.
As a bettor, it can be smart to fade an MLB pitcher in his next outing after a no-hitter if the manager allowed said pitcher to throw way more pitches than usual – which often happens because everyone is wrapped up in the moment. Just ask a Mets fan what Johan Santana was like after he got that first no-hitter in franchise history, throwing 134 pitches, in June 2012.
Last Wednesday's game in Oakland was indeed German's first complete game but it only took him 99 pitches, a number he also reached on June 4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. German showed no issues after that season-high outing. Against the A's, the 30-year-old reached a three-ball count only twice and struck out nine. It was the first perfect game in the majors since Seattle's Felix Hernandez accomplished the feat on Aug. 15, 2012, against the Rays. German reportedly had dedicated the start to an uncle who died earlier last week and that he "cried a lot in the clubhouse" the day before making his start.
If you were wondering, and I was, Hernandez won his start start immediately after his perfect game (which took him 113 pitches to complete). He allowed a run and seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk over 7.2 innings vs. Cleveland. King Felix getting to 100-plus pitches was commonplace back then. Different era.
German is 5-5 with a 4.54 ERA, 60 hits allowed and 78 strikeouts in his 15 starts. He hasn't faced Baltimore this year and is 6-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 48.2 career innings vs. the Orioles.
The last time Baltimore was no-hit came on Aug. 12, 2015, against Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma. The Orioles have never been involved in a perfect game, one of only seven franchises to never be. The longest current streak of avoiding a no-hitter belongs to the Nationals/Expos franchise dating back to July 18, 1999, when the Yankees' David Cone threw a perfect game against Montreal.
The Orioles start Tyler Wells (6-4, 3.21 ERA), who has become their most dependable starter this year. Wells allowed exactly two earned runs in all five June starts and was 3-2 with a 3.03 ERA. He is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA in two starts vs. the Yankees in 2023 and 0-4 with a 5.26 ERA in 37.2 career innings. Like German, he's set at O/U 5.5 hits and 2.5 ER.
