The Mariners had last night's game go sideways in a hurry, after starting off with a walk and home run to go up 2-0 quick, they were subsequently shut down for 7+ innings until a couple meaningless home runs late in the game. The bullpen was putrid for Seattle but they didn't use any of their high leverage arms because of the score, so you have to kind of throw those numbers out. They still hold a major edge over Toronto in the bullpen and Max Scherzer allowed 4+ runs in five of his last six appearances, plus has yet to take the ball in the postseason.
I don't know what's happening right now in MLB after home teams largely dominated the first two rounds. Now they can't buy a win. Happy as a fan overall that the Jays got Game 3 to at least extend this to five. But 41-year-old Max Scherzer is no longer a very good pitcher. Tonight may well be his final MLB start. First-ballot HOFer. Seattle's Luis Castillo, meanwhile, was terrific in the ALDS and had another typically solid year. Ideal scenario: M's win here, Jays tomorrow to send it back to Toronto.
There's a lot being made about recent efforts of Seattle starter Luis Castillo, who has been almost airtight since early September. Yet some of those efforts were vs. flawed (including the Rockies and Angels) or fading opposition, and Dan Wilson left Castillo in the game for just 4 2/3 innings in Game 2 vs. the Tigers. The Blue Jays bats got hot last night as the entire offense seemed to relax a bit being away from home, but Toronto might needed another homer barrage tonight to help out starter Max Scherzer, who was hardly on fire in September with a 10.20 ERA. The Jays bullpen needs to be ready tonight. Play Blue Jays-Mariners Over
