Toronto has lost seven of its last nine games against right-handed pitchers with an ERA under 3.50. Logan Gilbert will start instead of Luis Castillo and Gilbert has held his opponents to two runs, or less, in each of his last seven starts. The Blue Jays have won all four of Trey Yesavage’s appearances and can't afford to go down 0-2 with three games in Seattle coming up. Gilbert is off short rest in, almost, a must win for the Blue Jays.
Major kudos to the Mariners for winning Game 1 at perhaps the hardest place to play in MLB right now and with the M's seemingly as such a disadvantage in terms of rested arms, etc. And I can't say I love backing a rookie making only his fifth big-league start today, but Toronto's Trey Yesavage hasn't looked like a rookie. Seattle's Logan Gilbert is excellent but was 3-4 with a 4.74 away during the year and a fair amount of Jays have good splits off him led by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Will rookie Trey Yesevage be the secret weapon for Toronto in the playoffs? He delivered for John Schneider in the ALDS spinning 5 1/3 shutout innings and striking out 11 Yanks in the Game 2 romp on October 5. Across Yesevage's last two starts, he hasn't allowed a run in 10 1/3 IP, while striking out 16 and only 3 walks (0.77 WHIP). Meanwhile Seattle opts for Logan Gilbert on the hill after he was summoned from the bullpen for emergency duty in Game 5 of the ALDS vs. Detroit, where he was a bit wobbly in 2 IP (three hits allowed) though not allowing a run. Backs to the wall, Toronto has to get this one tonight. Play Blue Jays on Run Line
