The two teams combined for 18 runs in Game 4. The pitchers can resemble aces in this one in Zac Gallen and Nathan Eovaldi, but Gallen is around 250 innings and he'd never previously thrown more than 190 in a year. He's tired and he's looked like it in the playoffs. Eovaldi got hit hard by the D-backs in Game 1 and a second look in less than a week bodes well for them. The Rangers' bullpen is a mess, too. The roof is open, too, with weather conducive for runs.
Nathan Eovaldi for the Rangers and Zac Gallen for the DBacks, it is the second time around for these two. It is very interesting that Eovaldi's last four starts of the regular season he pitched 16 innings, allowed 18 hits, 17 earned runs, five HR’s, 10 walks and 17 strikeouts. Gallen allowed 2 runs or less in 7 of this last 11 starts including a 3-hit shutout at Wrigley Field. The playoffs have been a different story with Eovaldi bringing a 2.42 ERA into game one of the World Series but was knock out in the 5th, pushing his playoff ERA up to 3.52. Gallen has a 5.27 ERA in the playoffs. The roof is open.
The Rangers have won Nathan Eovaldi’s last five starts and even though Arizona hit him for five runs he was on it with eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings. The Diamondbacks have lost Zac Gallen’s last three starts, but four of his last five starts have been on the road, At home, Arizona has gone 12-5 behind Gallen while he posted a 2.67 ERA. The home energy and stakes involved in Game 5 should elevate his game. I like a classic pitcher’s duel here. The Under is the best bet.
Though this looks the best pitching matchup remaining in whatever is left of this World Series, it's also a potential close-out game, and Torey Lovullo is not going to waste much time if Zac Gallen isn't sharp on the mound. By this stage, both bullpens are worn out, as we witnessed last night in the 11-7 slugfest, with Game 3 looking like the outlier in this series. Don't discount the D-backs getting to Nathan Eovaldi at some point and stretching this series back to Arlington, but the trend has been over as the playoffs have progressed for Texas.
