I think Sandy Alcantara is my favorite starter in MLB, and part of that can be attributed to Marlins manager Don Mattingly bucking the system. Alcantara has all the numbers and stats as a traditional ace, but what I love the most is that he’s allowed to finish his own mess at the end of games regardless of pitch count. He has two complete games, which is twice as many as any other starter in the majors. The Marlins have won five straight, and the Angels have lost three straight. Marlins win.
The Marlins just pulled off the four-game sweep on the road and now they head home where they are much better on the season at 19-16. They face off in an interleague matchup against the Angels. The Angels were just swept by the Astros, and they are 10-17 in their past 27 games. They are also 16-21 on the road. Sandy Alcantara is starting for the Marlins, and he has been one of the best pitchers in the league. The Marlins should have their bullpen back and available to pitch after him as well, after most of them were unavailable yesterday. I like the Marlins to stay hot.
The Marlins return home after closing their road trip with five straight wins, most coming in dramatic fashion. Miami finished off a sweep of Washington on Monday despite resting some key regulars. The Marlins have won seven of their last nine home games and send ace Sandy Alcantara against the Angels, who are 16-21 on the road. Alcantara (8-3, 1.95 ERA) has been even better at home with a 1.80 ERA and is coming off a complete-game victory over the Cardinals. Some might worry that he threw 117 pitches, but he had an extra day of rest. The Angels struck out 48 times in getting swept by Houston over the weekend, with Mike Trout going 0 for 11 with nine strikeouts.
