Seattle's Logan Gilbert (4-1, 2.13) has better numbers than Toronto's Jose Berrios (2-2, 5.82), but Gilbert has shown some cracks in the past two starts and Berrios is just too good to continue with an ERA near 6.00. His past two home starts were quite good. And the Jays are simply different beasts offensively at Rogers Centre, why we won on them Monday. Toronto batters currently rank 3rd in the AL in home SLG (.423), 4th in home AVG (.249), 4th in home OPS (.738), and 6th in home OBP (.315). I frankly don't know why the M's are starting both Mike Ford (.154, 0 HR, 4 RBI) and Steven Souza (.154, 0 HR, 1 RBI). Those should be automatic outs along with catcher Cal Raleigh (.086, 2 HR, 3 RBI).
Logan Gilbert has been very good this season, although he has struggled a bit in his past couple outings. He should have success against the righty heavy lineup of the Blue Jays. Jose Berrios has been struggling all season, and the Blue Jays bullpen behind him isn’t much better. Tim Mayza was just added to the IL and Jordan Romano could be out again with an illness. I like the Mariners to salvage at least one game from this series.
Jose Berrios has an ERA of 5.82 with just 24 strikeouts in 34 IP. I don't think he's completely healthy. His FIP is 5.13, which is well above his career numbers. The Mariners' first four batters went 0-for-16 in Monday's setback, totaling four hits total (3 singles, 1 double). Logan Gilbert took the loss pitching at Rodgers Centre last August and now returns a much improved pitcher. I like the road team!
